Peters Bridge has ‘cut villagers off’
NEARLY two months after the Pe- ters Bridge across the Medway opened, residents have complained that the access road to their village is still blocked. The bridge opened on September
15, linking the Peters Village devel- opment, near Wouldham with Snodland and Halling. But traffic lights on the Hall Road
exit from the roundabout are not working, meaning that the access to Wouldham is closed. Families trav- elling from the Snodland side of the river to Wouldham have to come off the bridge and turn right andmakea 15-minute trip through Burham. Developer Trenport said there had
been issues with the radar detection system in the lights, designed to speed bus traffic. Contractors Bam Nuttall had taken longer to rectify than expected. A Trenport spokesman said the
firm had been commissioned to de- liver engineering works and infra- structure, to the satisfaction of KCC. He said: “Quite rightly, on safety grounds, KCC said it will not issue the first certificate for the road until the lights are operational.
“Wouldhamresidents do have ve- hicular access to the bridge; they simply go via Burham. This is in- convenient, but far better than what was available to Wouldham resi- dents before the bridge opened. “In the meantime, they can access
it on foot, bike or horse – whatmany petitioned for in the first place. “It is an unfortunate irony that in
trying to alleviate the concerns of those who took that stance, we formed the plan to ‘green’ Hall Road with hedges, a cycleway, and traffic lights to manage vehicles carefully and give priority to buses. “This has led to issues with the
radar detection element of the Hall Road lights. Aspokesman for KCC said itwas applying pressure to developers to find a solution.

News Planting to beat polio
A CARPET of purple crocuses has been planted by volunteers at Kings Hill to raise awareness of polio as part of the Purple4polio campaign. The flower is a symbol of the
Rotary Club’s worldwide campaign, now in its 30th year, to eradicate the disease, with the colour representing the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child who has been immunised. This year the Kings Hill
branch has joined forces with developer Liberty Property Trust to highlight the issue, which ties in with the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Foundation. Together they have planted thousands of Ruby Giant bulbs around the silver ball sculpture at the entrance to the development. The flowers will be in bloom in time for Rotary Day on February 23, 2017. Becky Turner, president of Kings Hill Rotary Club, said: “Polio has no
cure and is a crippling and potentially fatal disease, with children under five being at greatest risk. Although polio can’t be cured, it can be prevented by vaccination – and for as little as 60p, a child can be protected for life.”
