Danielle’s leap to thank charity

A WOMAN who suffered disfig- uring burns in an accident on a campsite at West Malling is to freefall for the foundation that helped her during her recovery. Danielle Branch was on holiday

with her mum Jan and husband Gez Clark onNewYear’s Eve at the Caravan Club park in Addington when fire ripped through their mo- torhome. The devastating fire put Danielle’s parents in hospital for nearly a month and left Danielle in a coma with 85% burns, most of whichwere third-degree. Six months after being released

from hospital, Danielle is hoping to raise money for the Katie Piper Foundation that helped her through one of the toughest times of her life. Still healing from the burns that

covered her face and body, she will be scarred for life, but in an inspir- ing move, Danielle has decided to lead the fund-raising charge by her family, from Lenham, with a 12,000ft freefall skydive, whichwas due to take place at Headcorn on Friday, November 4.

Danielle before and after the fire She hopes the jump, which had

to be cancelled last month because of bad weather, will raise more than £5,000 for the charity. The family will also be raffling 12

tickets for the Leeds Castle Classi- cal Concert and on June 24, they will be holding a masked ball in the magnificent Tithe Barn in Lenham, where Gez is the village crier. Raffle tickets and those for the

ball, which will include an auction by TV star Vic Reeves, will be on sale at Lenham Country Market during November and December. Sponsor Danielle’s parachute

jump on the Just Givingwebsite or for details of the ball email gez.clark@hotmail.com.

News Hospice service for bereaved

THERE is a chance to remember loved ones at two magical events being held by the Heart of Kent Hospice in Aylesford. Last year’s Light Up a Life events brought more than 200 bereaved fam-

ilies together, many of whom received help fromthe Preston Hall hospice, or had reason to thank it for the home support it offers 500 people from the area every week. This year’s informal Sunday services will be at the hospice on November

27 and Aylesford Priory on December 4, both starting at 4.30 pm. Sainsbury’s at QuarryWood is providing the parking for the event in the hospice garden across the road, which is expected to run for about half-an- hour. Limited indoor seating is available and can be reserved by the less able on 01622 790195. The event at The Friars will be a traditional gathering for readings and

carols in the shrine at the priory. Seating and parking will be available, al- though those attending are advised to take a cushion and wear some- thing warm for the hour-long service. At both events, families will have an opportunity to buy a candle. The highlight will be the blessing of Remembrance Stars, which are completed by relatives and will be displayed on a tree at the hospice. To reserve a place, request a star or an entry in the book of remem-

brance, pick up a form from the charity’s shops; the hospice at Preston Hall; visit www.hokh.org or call fundraising on 01622 790195.

Griers ready for icy roads

ROAD-USERS will be pleased to learn that the county council is warming up its fleet of gritters. The county council says its 64 trucks, which recently carried out a “dry run” of the 53 primary routes in Kent that are gritted, will remain on stand-by until March. The council says it has more than 2,000 salt bins around the

county and 117 farmers are on call to help plough 208 routes in the event of snow. It has 20,000 tonnes of salt held in a network of depots. The county council is also call-

ing on the public to be road ready as the coldweather approaches. The gritters covered about

70,000 miles across Kent during last year’s relativelywarm winter.
