Pub plans face a village backlash
PLANS to build homes on the site of a fire-struck pub have sparked opposition from villagers. The 18th century Rose and Crown in Banbridges Road, East Peckham, closed in 2009. The build- ing was hit by flood and two fires, lost its listed status and eventually had to be demolished. Now Baxter Homes (South East)
has submitted proposals to Ton- bridge and Malling Council to build eight three-bedroom town houses with 20 car parking spaces. However, residents say the town- houses would not be in keeping with the village. The parish council did not oppose the scheme pro- vided the developer considered the heights of the three-storey homes and the two-storey houses nearby. The Environment Agency ob-
jected to the project, saying it is within a high-risk area for flooding. The pub became an eyesore after
the fires and the floods in 2013. Residentswere pleased to see the

permission for the demolition, the borough council stopped the work. Following complaints about the ap- pearance of the site, the council served an enforcement notice that the building be cleared and fenced. Villagers’ objections to the pro-
posed town houses have been posted on the borough’swebsite. A neighbour in Old Road said:
“The townhouses would be able to view over other residents’ gardens in Old Road or intoMedway Mead- ows from their top floor.” A Hale Road resident wrote to
the borough council: “There have been quite enough tasteless prop- erties built in East Peckham, but this is at the entrance to the village and therefore the site is more sen- sitive.”
