Charlie Girling’s sporting tribute

A SHIELD for sporting achieve- ment is to be presented in memory of Maidstone student Charlie Girling, who died while on a Scout trip in Finland this summer. The idea has

been put forward by fellow students at Maplesden Noakes School, where 12-year-old Charlie (pictured) was well known for his love of

sport, especially football. A “chill out garden” in his memory is also to be created. Head teacher RichardOwen said students were busy raising money and were also keen to support Charlie’s family with its campaign to provide a new hut for Charlie’s Scout group. He said: “Our school was shocked by the news of Charlie’s death this summer and since the start of termwe have been trying to work out howwe can help the fam- ily to raise money for the cause they have established to build a hut for the 1st Aylesford troop.”

As part of that, the school is ar- ranging a charity challenge with Maidstone United Football Club between staff and ex-pro players on December 2 at the Gallagher Sta- dium. Charlie was a regular sup- porter at the stadium and fans observed a minute’s silence in his memory on learning of his death. Charlie’s family – mum Helene,

dad Les, brother Jack and sister Abby – from Ash Close in Ayles- ford, have welcomed the school’s involvement and their ideas to re- member a much-loved member of the school. Charlie died suddenly on July 24 while attending an inter- national Scouting jamboree in Hameenlinna, 1,500 miles from home. A spokesman forther Mid Kent coroner said investigations had confirmed Charlie’s deathwas due to natural causes, adding: “The in- vestigation has been discontinued due to a natural cause of death. As such there will be no need for an in- quest, and there is no further obli- gation for the Coroner, and, therefore, the death is being treated as a death abroad.”

Volunteers clean up Kings Hill

RESIDENTS from Kings Hill demonstrated just how much they care about ntheri community when they carried out a tidy-up. The 35 enthusiastic volunteers spent several hours clearing weeds from

grass verges and footpaths in the Kings Hill area and picking up litter. They collected 59 bags of green waste and just one bag of litter. The large collection ofweeds and other vegetation was taken for composting locally. Tonbridge and MallingCouncil provided the group with litter-picking equip-

ment and collected the rubbish and vegetation. This was the latest in a se- ries of events across the borough organised as part of the Love Kent – Hate Litter campaign, supported by LitterGram, which aims to encourage people to do their bit to help keep their local communities clean and tidy. Kings Hill residents, Andrea Hood and Margaret Knock, organised the tidy-

up. Andrea said: “It feels great to do our bit to keep Kings Hill looking as beau- tiful as the daywemoved in.”
