Micropub plan iswelcomed

PLANS to turn a West Malling house into the town’s first mi- cropub have won the support of traders, residents and councillors. David Catterall submitted his pro-

posals to Tonbridge and Malling Council to convert a vacant property behind The Crop Shop at 52 High Street (pictured) into “a small drink- ing house” called The Malling Jug. He and business partner Rick

Mason intend to offer customers the chance to enjoy local beer and a chat without being distracted by noisy music and fruit machines. After explaining his ideas to a

public meeting attended by 60 peo- ple, and delivering 530 leaflets to the nearest houses and shops, Mr Cat- terall, a 52-year-old father-of-three, and West Malling resident, has gained widespread backing for the scheme. He collected 22 letters of support from neighbours and busi- nesses which accompanied the ap- plication and a number of people have written to the borough council to express their approval. Richard Selkirk, vice-chairman of

West Malling Parish Council, said: “We are very supportive of this ap-

plication. The addition of a mi- cropub to theWest Malling business community will have a positive im- pact on our High Street and bring a different type of business to our town.” A resident of Whimbrel Green, Larkfield, thought the micropub would be “competition to the big business pubs in the village”. Mr Catterall, who already owns a

food and beverage business and em- ploys 700 people, says he does not see the micropub as a high revenue creator.Hesays it is more a business in a sector that he is passionate about and feels would “re-establish a lost tradition” toWest Malling. He plans to open from noon to

9pm Tuesday to Sunday, and on bank holiday Mondays.
