“Remarkably increased production” for VPK’s PM6 at Oudegem
successfully started up. The rebuild by Valmet in the
T
forming, drying and reeling sections increased PM6’s capacity from 185,000 to 200,000 tons per year of high quality packaging grades. “The rebuild project went very
well. The whole PM6 crew and Valmet experts worked towards the same target: a safe and on-time start-up,” said Jaakko Kerttula, project manager at Valmet. Objective of the rebuild was to
improve machine speed, safety and efficiency. Equipment supplied
for the forming section included mist eliminators, vacuum foil boxes and top wire lengthening with additional drive. For the drying section, Valmet supplied UnoRun S runnability boxes, new lead rolls and mechanical drive modification and, additionally,
Tartas dissolving pulp mill to improve process stability
Tembec’s speciality dissolving pulp mill at Tartas in France has ordered a Valmet IQ quality control system (QCS) and an expansion of its existing Valmet DNA distributed control system (DCS) for its pulp dryer. With the investment, the mill is planning to improve process stability and reduce lost time during start-ups, breaks and speed changes. Start-up of the QCS is scheduled for October 2016. “We decided to change our DCS and QCS according to our obsolescence management plan. The choice was made between our existing supplier and Valmet. We chose Valmet because of better reactivity and potential quality benefits,”

said Ludovic Berdinel, project department director at Tembec Tartas SAS. Boris Hosteins, sales manager
for automation in France and North Africa at Valmet, added: “The mill was convinced about our capability to improve their pulp dryer performance through our automation solution and process skills.” Tembec Tartas SAS is the leader in production of speciality cellulose used in industries such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, packaged foods and construction. Its parent company Tembec is a large, diversified and integrated forest products company with principal operations in Canada and France.

year earlier, also improving performance of the mill. Alexis Zenner, business unit manager at the Oudegem Mill, said: “We have achieved high availability and remarkably increased production with automatic grade change, improved process monitoring, and faster paper specifications after web break. Working together with Valmet in these two projects has truly moved our performance forward.” VPK Paper has for the past 80
years developed to become one of the leading paper mills in Europe with capacity to convert 500,000 tons of recovered paper into corrugated and solid board, and tubes and cores.
Brown stock washing plant for Södra Cell Mörrum
As part of the second stage of Södra Cell’s expansion of its Mörrum mill in Sweden, the brown stock washing plant in the dissolving line is being modernised by Valmet. The brown stock washing
plant rebuild – scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2017 – will increase the mill’s pulp production capacity by 45,000 tons. “The successful cooperation with Valmet on the dissolving line that began in 2011 continues with the next step. The investment will enable increased production and increased opportunities to further enhance the production quality of our dissolving pulp,” says Martin Säll, engineer and project manager at
Södra Cell Mörrum. Between 2014 and 2020,
Södra Cell Mörrum plans to expand production capacity from 380,000 to 500,000 tons, of which 200,000 tons will consist of high quality dissolving pulp. The modernization of the
brown stock washing plant involves the installation of three new Valmet TwinRoll presses, two before the oxygen stage and one before the bleach plant. Södra Cell is one of the world’s
largest softwood pulp producers and operates three pulp mills in Sweden: Mörrum, Mönsterås and Värö. Södra Cell Mörrum currently produces high-quality pulp and is the only Södra mill to produce textile pulp, for which demand is growing rapidly.
