rage notes TO BE YOU! “It is not the end of the physical body that

should worry us. Rather, our concern must be to live while we’re alive—to release our inner selves from the spiritual death that comes with living behind a facade designed to conform to external definitions of who and what we are.” ―Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Our beautiful cover and fashion section this month

feature men in costume and it’s a totally fabulous costume at that. It, the interviews I’ve done and the fact that October is the month we typically feature things worn, has spurned thoughts about the things we wear both sewn and how we dress ourselves emotionally. We spend our lives learning about what is acceptable and what is not. That message starts early with what boys and girls should and shouldn’t wear. Dresses and feminine frills for girls, muted pants and conservative dress for boys...At least we used to. Thankfully, the world is coming around, ever so slowly…to the idea that clothes don’t make the man or the woman and that what’s inside holds the most value. I’m not foolish enough to think that we’re there yet, but from this little boy who used to love “frilly things,” and get the snot beaten out of him for it by older siblings, it’s pretty amazing how far we have come. Tyler Glenn and I talked a lot about the process of shedding part of a costume he’s worn for a very long time and what a challenging and exciting process it was. “This last year was one of more self-discovery and just learning more about what I believe in and the church that I was a part of. I think that any sort of spiritual awakening or paradigm shift can cause even more change and that’s been really exciting.” That paradigm shift, proved a powerful motivator that allowed him to discover more about who he truly is and cast off the shadows he had been burdened with. “I realize now that it’s really just the beginning. It takes a lot of experiences like that to shift a paradigm and become who you are.” A bit of discovery that produced one heck of a powerful album in Excommunication and a potent message that I had the joy to hear before it was officially released. Brace yourselves for a winner. Versailles is the new, lush series offered up through Ovation that centers on the relationship between Louis XIV and his brother Philippe and the many intrigues of 17th century court life in France. History

has painted a picture, a façade if you will, about the fabulous riches of the period and time has fortunately left some of the remnants for us to glory in such as resplendent Chateau de Versailles. A little history I didn’t know, was that brother Philippe was in fact gay and had a lover, Chevalier for most of his life. It didn’t fit in the mask of history, so it was simply erased, as was much of the squalor and filth that lived inside the palace itself. In the series however, it is front-and-center, and as Evan Williams who plays Chevalier, Philippe’s lover offered, it’s uniquely modern. “The world of Louis XIV had a problem with it, but the gaze of the camera does not. I think that distinction is one of the things that makes the show truly modern and is what has caught the imagination from so many of the fans.” A modern take indeed, especially when you consider that homosexuality at the time was still punishable by death. A frock that time has thankfully chosen do disrobe itself of. JoJo talked of having to grow up and shed things

of a childish nature, the protective mask of youth was taken pretty early from her. She had to fight hard for control of her music, a process that would take ten years and would only recently allow her to place control of her own voice firmly back in her hands. Imagine not having the ability to have ownership of something so central to who you are. She has chosen wisdom rather than bitterness, “I don’t think I could have had this much gratitude and perspective that I have now, if it weren’t for having to sacrifice and do everything that I had to do to get out of that situation. I can only look back on it and think that it was meant to change my perspective on all of it. It makes it a lot more serious, more precious and I am so thankful to have it.” Wise words for a 25-year-old woman. There you have it folks, this month’s take on the

things we wear inside and out. It can be a thing of beauty or it can be something of a prison, depending on the façade you’re living with. And speaking of what we wear, October is the month for planning your ultimate, costumed creation. Halloween is

upon us again, so what façade will you choose?
