ABRAHAM GONZALES A ROYAL PIECE
Where are you from and what’s your background ? I am from Arizona, but a Californian now! I am the creator and designer of A Royal Piece. In my day job, I work in Human Resources. How long have you been designing? I have been designing things since I was a kid (thanks mom)! For the last couple of years since, I have been teaching Brazilian Samba in San Diego, these feathers and sequins and things have inched their way into my life. My involvement in Rio style of Samba is the reason I started making these feathered pieces. It really started because I wanted to look cute and fierce alongside all these female samba dancers I would perform with on stage. And, none of the guys around here were doing feathers, so if I was going to do it, I wanted to be the Liberace of Samba! What inspires you? It is really neat to see how people come alive when they put on the pieces, it’s like you see the real person come out. The creative process can heal you or make you come alive. That inspires me. With the collection, color and texture, the endless possibilities are exciting. I totally nerd out when I see fringe, feathers and glitter! Approximately how much time does it take for each piece to come to life?
Anywhere from eight to 15 hours.
When I am working on a piece, it’s hard not to redo things because I want to try everything I can with a piece. In my world, more is more.
Each piece is original. How do you part ways from them? It’s painful. I am not even going to lie. I want to wear every piece... even randomly to grocery shop. Apart from Samba costume pieces, what other items do you design? Now, my designs have taken on new adventures, like costumes for dance/ performance groups and drag artists. Drag queens make everything better. They have been the most fun to design for! I am also working on wearable art that I hope to roll out this coming spring.
