REMASTERING HER WORLD OWNING IT
WITH MAD LOVE by joel martens
For someone so young, this girl, really I
should be saying woman, has had more than her share of successes and challenges. At the tender age of 12, she recorded her eponymous first album, released on June 22, 2004 through Da Family Entertainment, Blackground Records and Universal Records. By 13, the debut single, “Leave (Get Out)” peaked in Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart top 20, also topping the Pop 100 singles chart, making her the youngest artist in history to do
so.JoJo the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) the same year. Remember folks, Facebook was just getting started, this was pre-Twitter, pre-Instagram, pre-social media as we know it. Her second album,The High Road, was released in October 2006, with its lead single, “Too Little Too Late” reaching number three onBillboard’s Hot 100 and certified platinum by the RIAA in March 2007. Laurels to rest upon for most, but this spitfire was acting as well, starting on television in 2002, appearing onThe Bernie Mac Show, American Dreams and Romeo!, in Lifetime’s film,True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet and then following that up with two major Hollywood films, Aquamarine andRV. By the time her third album was due, her relationship with her label, Blackground Re- cords started to come unglued. She offered up several album’s worth of new material, which was met with a stony silence, effectively
holding the young star’s career hostage for more than ten years. By 2013, JoJo knew she had to take control, suing Blackground. After a year-long, protracted battle, she finally won the rights to use her voice any way she wanted in January of 2014. Though she says there were many moments of doubt, JoJo never stopped believing she was meant to sing. If her current album,Mad Love is any indi-
cation of that determination and chutzpah, we are the benefit of all JoJo’s hard-fought battles and this multi-talented singer/songwriter/ actress’s total commitment to her craft. Vocal abilities beyond her tender years bely
a woman ready to open up and bear her soul. Can’t wait to hear more from
her...And after this, nor will you.
