URBAN MO’S NEWEST ADDITION ANTHONY LAZARO

There’s a bright, new smiling face behind the

bar during happy hour at Urban MO’s Bar and Grill. His name is Anthony Lazaro. The 26-year- old, Monterey native is the latest bartender to serve up cocktails at this afternoon hot spot. The Rage Monthlysat down with Anthony to find out a little more about him and how he managed to get such a premier gig working the busiest happy hour in Hillcrest.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I’ve been in the service industry since I was 15, so

dang, that’s over a decade now. In the beginning, I worked as a host, then as a barista, serving came after that and up until a few weeks ago, I was doing the fine dining thing. Now I’m pouring booze for the masses! Other than that, I’ve been here in San Diego for around five years and my family has come to terms with the fact that they’ve lost me to Southern California. Does your face ever hurt from smiling so much? Ha! It’s paid for, so I’m getting as many miles as I

can out of it! How did you stumble into bartending? I literally stumbled…No joke! I was at my last

work place and walked behind the bar one day, began memorizing cocktail recipes and putting them together. I showed initiative, then a position became available and boom! The rest is history.

What was it like to step in for someone who has been behind the bar for thirteen years? It was a pretty wild opportunity that I was certain

I had to take. I knew the reputation of MO’s, in the sense of the business and the volume they rock out and I wanted to jump into it immediately. The biggest thing was keeping the guests happy. I know that this weekday business was built over time and I just wanted to maintain that. Where did you work before MO’s? WhisknLadle in La Jolla! I’ve been keeping the cougars quenched since 2012. What is your favorite item on the happy hour menu at MO’s? Food wise, the fish tacos. I think they’re particularly

special because they’re only offered on Mondays. For drink, I’m going with Kiss Ass Margaritas on Wednesdays. Yum…Blackberry liquor. Do you have a specialty drink that you serve? I’m a whiskey guy! For a super-approachable shot

for whiskey beginners, as well as whiskey veterans, I chill bourbon and hazelnut liquor. As far as a cocktail, I take a touch of peach schnapps, bourbon and OJ. What celebrities have you waited on? Daddy—I mean Josh Duhamel—in a coffee shop

in Carmel. He totally had that DILF$. I served Paul Walker at a restaurant in Monterey “pours one for the homie.” Here in San Diego, I served Zachary Quinto

and his hot ass, local boyfriend during Comic-Con. What keeps you busy away from work? I’m super active: I have a kayak that I never take out,

I have a rock climbing membership that I never use, I have a long board that I never ride and a volleyball that I never toss. I have however, been known to eat a pint of ice cream alone in bed while binge watching Netflix. Tell us about your apparent fascination with tattoos. In short, I’m a total masochist. But in truth, I absolutely love the aesthetic. I understand that they’re not for everyone and word on the street is that they’re pretty permanent. So, I’d caution anyone on his or her decision to get one. For me, they’re awesome and I love the idea of having permanent pieces of art on me. Is there anything new to look forward to from MO’s? Yes and it is pretty cool! Starting soon, the bartend-

ers at MO’s will be creating our own monthly personal E-blasts. Anyone that signs up with my personal link, bit.ly/anthonymos, will start receiving emails, which

include exclusive updates and specials written by me.
