Healdsburg, CA. ~ There is nothing quite like the ear- ly morning smell of urine soaked diapers. Believe me I am an expert.
In my family I am the oldest
of six children. When I was ten years old my parents had four children un- der the age of five. At the time I also had a seven year old little brother. And, don’t for- get when I was a child it was dur- ing the 1950’s and this wonderful creation called the disposal diaper
had not yet been invented. I changed too many diapers to even guess at the number. We tried everything to make this process easier. At one time we had a laundry ser- vice come and exchange the dirty diapers for clean ones. It sounds great. Except with all those tiny ones in diapers we ended up with huge bags of dirty diapers waiting for
pickup. It stank up the house. I got to be an expert at diaper changing. When I first started diaper changing I would take that dirty diaper and shake out its contents into the toilet. Af- ter a while it got to the point where I’d just put my whole diaper-filled hand in the toilet bowl and shake it. It was way more ef- ficient.
In my late twen- ties, almost a de- cade after having changed anyone’s diaper, I swear I could still smell baby poop under
my finger nails. Whenever I hear a young
parent complain about diaper changing I just smile.
