Golden Anniversary, the icing on the cake

I

nnovation is a piece of cake for a Wolverhampton manufacturer of specialist pre-painted metals which is celebrating its 50th anniversary amid plans for future growth and development.

Cooper Coated Coil (CCC)

designs, produces and distributes pre-coated metals for bakeware, domestic appliances, housewares and specialised industrial manufacturing. It pioneered the GlideX brand

which benefits from a unique coating process which gives a scratch-resistant, flake-resistant surface. These non-stick surfaces are roller coated, not sprayed, meaning they last much longer than most branded bakeware made in China. That’s why the company,

which is based in Wolverhampton, marked its anniversary with a cake – big enough to be cut into portions

for its 75-strong workforce. Innovation and durability

have always gone hand-in-hand for CCC. The firm was founded in Aldridge on the back of the building and automotive trade, producing pre-painted metal for everything from garage doors to car speedo dials – but was soon taking a different road. In the 1970s it won a contract

with Polaroid to produce instamatic film cassette casings, using a new type of metal coil which was pioneered in Japan. Then, in the 80’s, CCC was the first company in the world to apply non-stick coatings to metal coils which could be used to make bakeware – the beginnings of the GlideX quality mark which is now stocked by retailers such as Amazon and Dunelm. Today, the firm coats enough

coil to produce the equivalent of 50 million pieces of bakeware each year!

Said Managing Director, Kevin

Tranter: “Over the last 50 years, we have developed extensive knowledge and skills in the development of non-stick and other niche industrial coatings which have made us experts in these techniques and generated orders from across the world.” In 2009, CCC invested in a new 940mm wide coating line on a new site in Wolverhampton - still the widest, fastest non-stick coating line in the world. The company now runs a 24-hour-a- day operation, six days a week. Fifty years of growth has seen a steady increase to its ‘family’ of experienced workers. The firm operates a continual recruitment process to bring engineering and manufacturing staff to the factory floor. A number of people have

recruitment programme, which will see another six future leaders join the business by September. Further investment is planned

for 2017, which will see the company expand further, aiming to take sales over £30M. Added Kevin: “Fifty years is

a landmark on our journey, a chance to take a look back at where we have come from and where we want to head. It’s a time for celebration and I truly believe that there are golden years ahead.”
