for the first time. There’s a large area at Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street that will offer free admission and will feature ‘80s and ’90s music, the Art of Pride gallery, community booths, food trucks, and more. The ticketed portion of the festival has the live-music stages, beverage gardens, exhibitors, and all the other activities people are familiar with.”
Regarding accessibility for the overall community: “We want Pride to be accessible to everyone. The rally and the parade are free to attend. We’ve also added a free area to the festival this year. For the ticketed area of the festival, we offer free weekend admission to everyone who works a single volunteer shift. Admission is also free to youths 14 and under. For those who buy a ticket, we kept prices the same this year: a weekend pass is $20 in advance or $25 at the gate.”
The reasoning behind moving this year’s Spirit of Stonewall Rally and Awards Ceremony to Marston Point: “We outgrew the available space on Normal Street, so we moved the rally back to Balboa Park where it used to be held.
Security changes attendees can expect in light of the terrible events in Orlando: “We’ll have metal detectors at the festival for the first time. We don’t expect any problems, but some people are nervous in the wake of Orlando and we want to provide an extra layer of reassurance that people are safe. There will also be a significant law enforcement presence at both the festival and the parade.
Planned Orlando memorial events as a part of Pride: “The rally will open with a moment of silence for the victims in Orlando. We’ll also have two tributes in the parade, one at the beginning and one at the end. In the first tribute, 49 people will walk together down the parade route, each holding a sign with the name, age and photo of a victim. At the end, we’ll encourage everyone to fold in behind the parade and walk to the festival in a show of solidarity, compassion and resolve.
All in all, it looks like 2016 will be another mo- ment to come together in celebration of our unity, to revel in our diversity, commemorate those before us and to show the world that we can not and will not be broken.
