REMEMBERING WHY WE STILL FIGHT To say the events in Orlando last month
have been challenging for many of us to process, is beyond an understatement. I have struggled with how to broach the topic both as a gay man and as an editor, because the reverberations of such violence will continue to shape the LGBT community’s narrative for years to come. It’s tragedy has shaken me to my core and
serves as a reminder of how quickly one’s life can be taken away. It’s been an especially poignant moment for me personally, because it wasn’t too long ago that someone tried to take my life during a mugging, by stabbing me in the lower back here in Hillcrest several years ago. Though no homophobic slurs were made, it was pretty clear to me why they were in my neighborhood and how little value they placed on me as resident here. It was a seminal moment and helped me to
value so much more the gift of life and even more so, my life as a gay man and a member of the broader LGBT community. The mark it left on me and now the devastation of Orlando’s murders, stand as a stark reminder of why we can never take for granted what we’ve gained and an understanding that if there is one person out there suffering because of fear, violence and prejudice, or if one person is feeling abandoned, isolated and without resources, our job is not done. Harvey Milk’s words have, for me, always
served as an explanation for why there is so much power in telling our truths: “Every gay

person must come out. As difficult as it is, you must tell your immediate family. You must tell your relatives. You must tell your friends if indeed they are your friends. You must tell the people you work with. You must tell the people in the stores you shop in. Once they realize that we are indeed their children, that we are indeed everywhere, every myth, every lie, every innuendo will be destroyed once and all. And once you do, you will feel so much better.” The anonymity of the closet is no place for anyone to
live...and living in fear isn’t living at all. His words remind me that we must continue
to root out intolerance wherever it might live. In my mind, the best way to do it is by simply being who we are, proudly and without apology. Reminding the world that we in the LGBT community are your mothers, fathers, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends—as were those who died in Orlando—and we will not be forgotten. As you celebrate Pride this year, let it serve as
a reminder that you are a part of a much larger picture, one that has at times been besieged by setback and loss, as much as it has been shaped by joy, celebration and progress.
