that they have planned. “We want to open up the whole garden by 2020 and are finishing up on a fantastic viewpoint overlooking the whole garden called the Heather Hill.” Furnace wood and Furnace meadow will be the next area to open up next spring, which make up about twenty acres. Last year, the team opened another twelve acres of water garden at the far end. low level maintenance, so we are just taking them up to the higher levels of maintenance,” Mark says. “It’s a bit of a revival, and we are hoping we get the visitors that will then mean we can keep more gardeners on to maintain them to a good standard,” John tells me. “So far, it’s working. round - a trend for the National Trust as a whole - the team has to provide interest for the visitors at all times. “It’s quite exciting; one of the things we want to do is bring out the different seasonal interests because, traditionally, we are known as a spring garden. So it’s trying to create the wow factor at different times of the year. For example, the annual meadow mix on our famous Canal Terrace will look great in the summer holidays, and we’ve made a blue poppy garden which will take a couple of years to mature, but will be a big hit of blue, white and silver in May. We will be planting the sub-tropical themed garden in another couple of weeks, which will be something else that looks great up until the first frosts.
