Cobdown’s got sporting vision
A MAJOR plan to transform Cob- downSports and Social Club into a centre of excellence for a range of sports has been unveiled. More than 100 guests from na-
tional and local sport organisations, including former England soccer coach Peter Taylor and ex-Gilling- ham coach Andy Hessenthaler, joined politicians and county and borough council bosses at the for- mal launch of K Sports. The scheme for the Station Road,
Ditton site includes a large exten- sion to the clubhouse and gym, cre- ating five squash courts with a glass show court. Plans also include a floodlit 3G football pitch, sand-dressed surface for hockey, netball and other sports, an upgrade of the clubhouse, and a changing room block for four teams and officials as well as toilets for spectators. Details were outlined by Alan Dennington, K Sports chief execu- tive, before Sports Minister Tracey Crouch, performed the opening cer- emony. Miss Crouch said the new centre would provide opportunities for the whole community, adding:
“I have great hopes that we are re- ally going to champion sport here.” Mr Dennington said: “The vision
for theKSports project is to increase participation across a range of sports, fostering and encouraging excellence, alongside supporting ac- ademic achievement and vocational learning. It will also become a fan- tastic family venue.” The centre plans to hire out the ar-
tificial pitches to local teams and community groups fromMondayto Friday with matches and training at weekends. “The clubhouse, function suite
and plans for a restaurant will com- plement all sports sections and be available for hire to the wider com- munity,” saidMrDennington. “The KSports target is to be ready for the start of the 2016-17 season, and we look forward to offering a warm welcome to friends old and new.” The schemewas due to receive of-
ficial approval from Tonbridge and Malling councillors on the eve of the launch but the application was withdrawn before the planning meeting and will be considered at a later date.
Veronica quits after 30 years
SECRETARY Veronica Tipp was asked to help out at Snodland Town Council for two weeks – and stayed for 30 years. But Veronica, who is also
cemetery manager, is retiring in July. "One of the councillors asked me to come here to help for two weeks, " she said. "Then I was offered a permanent job.” She will continue as secretary of Snodland Twinning Association and
is also a trustee, secretary and treasurer of the Alms Houses Trust. She will also still be involved in the annual real ale festival and cricket
match but will resign as secretary of the Snodland Partnership. The council’s new secretary is Elinor Jones who previously worked as
a rent officer for Gravesham Borough Council for eight years. She is on the left of the picture with Veronica.
