enq.255 Fire Design Solutions wins contract on Elephant & Castle regeneration  

As part of substantial regeneration works in London’s Elephant and Castle, Fire Design Solutions (FDS), an award-winning smoke ventilation contractor, has been appointed to provide a number of its bespoke systems for a new residential development. FDS will design, install and commission fire safety systems for seven residential buildings on the first phase of Elephant Park, South Gardens – which range from six to fifteen storeys in height – as well as an underground car park. FDS will design and install both mechanical and natural smoke ventilation systems based on the individual buildings’ requirements. Two of the buildings will be fitted with natural smoke ventilation systems, while the complex design of the remaining five blocks will require the installation of mechanical smoke ventilation systems to return corridors to tenable conditions in the event of a fire, providing residents with a safe escape route. A corridor environmental system will also be installed, mitigating excess heat in the common areas during day-to-day use. FDS will install residential sprinkler systems in each apartment to provide addi- tional protection while reducing the risk of fire spreading. FDS will also provide a car park smoke ventilation system to exhaust pollutants produced by vehicles and to clear smoke to assist firefighting operations in the event of a fire.

UK Barrier Services were commissioned to replace a pair of barriers for the ARK Conference and Events centre. The venue wanted to update the parking equipment for its private parking area. The barriers from FAAC are now operated through a new wireless GSM intercom

and the existing keypads. UK Barrier Services installed Magnetic Microdrive Access barriers which are specifically designed for use in high frequency sites, e.g. industrial sites, residential buildings or parking areas. The Magnetic Access range not only offers a long-life cycle, great reliability and quality but also has an enduring design with extremely low operational costs. For this installation LED illuminated barrier arms were chosen to offer maximum visibility.

As a member and key contributor to the UK Slip Resistance Group (UKSRG), contract interiors spe- cialist Gradus has provided valuable input into a new guide that aims to make stairs safer. The guide enti- tled ‘What Makes Stairs Safer?’ offers an overview of the key aspects involved in creating safe internal stairs and aims to provide valuable, independent advice to

anyone involved in the design, specification, construction, installation, fitting or maintenance of stairs. The guide illustrates the rate of ‘Slip Trip and Fall’ (STF) accidents. As an independent organisation representing companies with an interest in floor safety, the UKSRG is committed to reducing this rate and con- sequently commissioned members to produce the guide.
