As its name suggests, Bournemouth University’s Fusion building has been designed to foster collaboration between teaching, research and the business world, but it also helps give a much-needed focus to the campus. Mark Smulian reports.
U
niversity campuses that have grown up in an ad hoc way can lack any focal point, and so it has been with Bournemouth University’s main Talbot site.
Not for much longer though. Later this summer Fusion 1
will be complete, an essentially circular structure four storeys in height that will form both a social and teaching hub. The area around the building is already occupied on
two sides and under the university’s development plan the remaining sides – currently occupied by a car park – will be
filled in, putting Fusion 1 in the slightly strange position of being a ‘building with no back,’ highly visible from all sides. The university wanted the building to reflect the ‘fusion’
concept that underlies the educational body’s ethos – that teaching, research and links with business and industry should work seamlessly together with staff and students engaged in each aspect learning from each other. Fusion 1 will in total cost £22m and provide some of space that will not be owned by any one faculty.
