building for education project report

From flights and battles in the sky to a peaceful learning environment

take off during the Battle of Britain, stands Grade II Listed former NAAFI building. Throughout the Second World War the airfield

was used as the front line of national defence and was fully operational up until 1978. Since then the building had fallen into a state of disrepair. Plans were successfully put forward to not only preserve an important part of history, but to renovate the former NAAFI building to become an independent secondary school. As the building is Listed and of great historical

importance, serious consideration had to be given on how to make it a comfortable and peaceful learning environment. The current primary windows could not be replaced, despite being draughty and letting in noise. Unispace Global

electaglaze has helped make an old NAAFI base turned independent school, more thermally efficient with the aid of its

neat cover channels that conceal the fixing. All of Selectaglaze’s units are tailor made to

ensure the tightest fit and use twin seals to virtually eliminate draughts and reducing heat loss by up to 50 per cent. Secondary glazing can also reduce noise ingress creating a quieter environment and a reduction of 45dB is easily achievable. Secondary glazing is an independent window

fitted to the room side of a building, and as a fully reversible adaptation is accepted by most heritage bodies. With 50 years’ experience and Royal Warrant

consulted Selectaglaze, the specialist in secondary glazing, to provide an unobtrusive solution suitable for the Listed building. Selectaglaze installed 70 units, using four

different product types to match the existing primary window styles and sight lines. On the circular windows, Selectaglaze used the Series 46 fixed unit, with its discreet slim line frame with

Jeckells’ keeps Icknield pupils in the shade

Jeckells’ the Sailmakers has recently installed three tensioned canopies over outside learning areas at Icknield School in Letchworth. Working closely with architects, Wilby & Burnett, Jeckells fabricated the canopies, sourced the stainless steel posts with red post bumpers and organised full installation to fit in with the school’s demanding

schedule. Ferrari Soltis 86 premium mesh material was used due it its strength and durability. In recent years Jeckells has built up a reputation for the design and manufacture of quality shade sails with an almost unlimited degree of versatility in design, colour and materials.

  Oxford University invisible automatic access

The purpose-built Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University, recently opened its TORMAXautomated swing doors to teachers, students and academics, welcoming them into a state-of-the-art facility. Crafted by Birmingham Veneers Ltd, the two impressive wooden and glass entrance doors are automated using two TORMAX iMotion 1401 operators concealed in sealed casings underneath the floor. Ensuring longevity and reliability, even in such a busy location, the iMotion motors, which are uniquely designed with no abrading parts to cause friction wear, dramatically minimises maintenance, allowing them to be neatly located out of sight. Contributing to low environmental impact, two sets of TORMAX powered automatic twin-leaf swing doors create a functional entrance lobby area. Effectively minimising heat-loss from the building, powerful high torque synchronous motors combine with user-friendly keypad controls that allows staff to adjust hold open times and open/closing speeds.
