Bernadette has set up direct-to-manufacturer accounts so that the team has peace of mind in supplying their transplant medication and Cristian either calls up patients the medication is ready or offers the delivery service, thereby ensuring that no patient ever has to worry.


Cristian has been a patient with the doctors at the main GP practice, North Glen, since the surgery was first opened. As such, she has not only built up a fantastic relationship with the doctors, nurses and support staff, but has been instrumental in building up a wonderful working relationship between the pharmacy and the GP practice. As a result, Cristian is now working part time with the GP practice and both Bernadette and the practice manager see this as a huge opportunity to share and develop understanding of each other’s worlds.


‘To see the care and pleasure she gets when someone has managed to quit because she has personally taken that time every week for twelve weeks to motivate, counsel and prescribe the most appropriate treatment fills me with pride,’ says Bernadette. ‘She adds value and true meaning to becoming a valued member of the integrated NHS team we are all striving for. We have recently had contact from the Fife smoking cessation co-ordinator, who has noticed an improvement in the QUIT rates, and this inspires Kara even more. For a young pharmacist this is a great compliment.


‘Kara helps me in so many ways but to summarise her passion and genuine caring personality is what makes her such an asset with the team. She is the IT brains of the outfit and has helped me come to terms with all the new processes that must be set up to ensure the smooth introduction of new services such as CMS which is key to the future of pharmacy.’


There’s no doubt that the local community benefits greatly from the great range of services that Bernadette and her team provide.


‘The public really cannot believe how many services they can access from a wee independent community pharmacy like ours,’ says Bernadette, ‘and the teamwork

and interrelationships and working together has been a great way for them to see nurses and pharmacists working together helping them to keep well. Our referral systems are also key to the teamwork and I am so proud to have a forward thinking and proactive practice.’


To fully appreciate the esteem in which Bernadette and her team are held, you only have to listen to the testimony of patients such as Evelyn Jordan.


‘Cadham Pharmacy has been my local pharmacy for 20 years and it has never failed to provide an excellent service to me and my family,’ Evelyn told Scottish Pharmacist. ‘Bernadette has always treated my mother and myself with respect and friendliness. She took the responsibility from myself in regards to medication for my mum and we have never had a single problem - which is fantastic. She has totally taken the stress from myself. In addition to being very professional, Bernadette is one of the friendliest people I have met.’


But it’s not only the patients, who appreciate the service offered by Bernadette and her team. The local GPs are also fully appreciative of the collaborative working partnership that


they enjoy with the pharmacy.


‘Bernadette can be entrusted with any complicated pharmacological issue that needs to be sorted,’ says Dr Muvva from Leslie Medical Practice. ‘Bernadette has also been a valuable contributor to our practice, and has made a significant contribution to running our hypertension and respiratory clinics. She has also actively participated in our annual flu/pneumonia/shingles vaccine campaigns, especially during the busy winter months.’


Dr Muvva’s sentiments are reiterated by Dr F Fawzi from the same practice.


‘Bernadette is one of those ‘rare quality’ individuals who really stands out,’ says Dr Fawzi. ‘I have worked with her for over six years since she began to run a blood pressure clinic at Leslie Medical Practice. I've always found her to be very supportive, friendly and a great asset to the team. She is always prepared to go that extra mile such as helping out with flu clinics and the occasional asthma clinic. She’s a consummate professional who cares for - and is driven by - the needs of her community.’
