Weather

Weather may not be the most important thing in choosing your wedding date (or no one would get married in Philadelphia in February as I did). But a little planning can insure that the day will be as beautiful as the bride.

On the Space Coast April and May offer the greatest chances for a beautiful day: 75% of the days are sunny, with relatively low humidity and temperatures in the low to mid 80s, according to National Weather Service statistics.

Here’s how the four seasons stack up in three important areas: temperature, precipitation and wind. Humidity, which can play havoc with hair dos and comfort, remains pretty consistent year round, believe it or not. However, afternoons are much better than mornings regardless of the month – with humidity levels of 50% to 60% compared with mid 80%.

Winter

January, February and March brings the coolest weather with highs averaging from the low to high seventies, and only seven or eight days with any rain. Winter can be the windiest season with average speeds over 9 miles per hour.

Spring

April, May and June features moderate temperatures start- ing in the low 70s and increasing to the high 80s in June. April and May aver- age six to eight days with rain but in June the norm is 14 days even though it’s slightly less windy.

Summer

July, August and September is guaranteed to be hot with tempera- tures right around 90 degrees, but even then, evenings cool down to the low 70s. During summer the risk of rain is greater, averaging 15 days, but wind speeds average the lowest of the year.

Fall

October, November and December cools down with high temperatures beginning in the mid- 80s and ending in the low 70s on average. Rainy days also taper off and wind speeds are generally around 8 miles per hour.

Companies who specializes in outdoor events, notes that since you can’t control the weather you need a backup plan. Most prefer that couples arrange for a sheltered space near by in case inclement conditions roll in before the “I Dos.” If you are having an event on the beach at a hotel, for example, forewarn the man- agement and staff that you may have to move indoors if weather disappoints. That way they will be prepared to make accommo- dations.

Scheduling summer weddings later in the day when both the heat and humidity will be the lowest – and maybe that afternoon thunder bumper will have cleared when the hour comes to take your vows.

A that a tent with sides that roll down can save the day if rain is expected. But, tents are not built for heavy winds. Tents for outdoor weddings can also be equipped with heaters for the winter months and air conditioned for the summer. Fans are good to have year round.

If hurricanes are a worry, the season runs from June 1 through November 30, but most storms tend to come in September and October. Back in 2004 at least two weddings were scheduled in Melbourne just one day after Hurricane Frances hit the area. With a little scrambling both brides tied the knot, suggesting that nothing really stands in the way of a young woman with marriage on her mind!
