Two men sought in pony death tragedy

POLICE are searching for two men after a pony, thought to have been driven in a harness race, was dumped dead in a road at Head- corn.

Shocked villagers reported see-

ing the colt, believed to be about three years old, drop to the ground on a sharp bend in Lenham Road, before it died. The men disappeared with the harness and two-wheeled cart which the animal had been pulling. The pony, which was said to

have sores all over its body and face, was discovered at lunchtime on Monday, May 16. The incident sparked fury on social media at the apparent treatment of the animal. Resident Lucille Blanquet said

the villagewas upset at such an act of “cruelty” and the way in which the horse had been left in the road “like a piece of rubbish was ap- palling”. She thought the horse

must have had a heart attack while trotting and was left there while the men van- ished with the cart and harness. The news prompted

a large number of com- ments on the village Facebook page with residents expressing disgust at the way the horse was treated and that there could have been a serious accident as it was left on a busy road where people drive at speed. Headcorn Parish Council chair-

Pony racing in an unrelated TV documentary

man Lynn Selby said that a lot of people had driven past and seen the animal and residentswere very upset.

Police said theywanted to speak

to two men who were seen with the animal shortly before its death. Aspokesman said: “It is reported

that the horse may have been in- volved in a harness race. It is un- derstood the horse had travelled with two men who are not believed to be from the Headcorn area. “Anyone who believes they have information that can help officers speak with the two men is asked to contact Kent Police.” Call 01622 604100, quoting 16-0555.
