KCC staff email under scrutiny
MORE than 100 Kent County Council employees have had their emails monitored by the author- ity, it has been disclosed. Corporate and democratic serv-
ices chief Cllr Gary Cooke said 108 employees had been put under scrutiny over a three-year period from 2013 to 2015.
There had School raises £60k for Nepal
STUDENTS at Sutton Valence School have celebrated “smashing” their fund-raising target of £60,000 to help children in Nepal. Tenmonths ago, they pledged to raise £58,000 to rebuild the secondary school at Dhading, destroyed by the 2015 earthquake. Now, that figure has been beaten, securing the money for the Pahar Trust project to rebuild an 18-classroom replacement Shree Tamang Kharka Secondary School. Among the pupils taking part in fund-raising activities, including sponsored car washes, a glittering black tie event, the sixth form ball and a Prep Practice-a-thon, were pupils who travelled to the country in December 2014 as part of their studies. Headmaster Bruce Grindlay says students jumped at the chance to
raise money for the relief work and, as the magnitude of the destruction became clear, established the Nepal Fund.
“When our new fence looks this good, is maintenance free and guaranteed for 25 years, it’s a no-brainer”
been no reason to tap into mem- bers’ accounts, as no allegations have been re- ceived to war- rant such an investigation, he said.
The information came to light
after Liberal Democrat Dan Daley tabled a question to KCC cabinet member Cllr Cooke, pictured. It said: “How many Kent County Council employees and how many councillors have had their emails monitored in each of the past three years and for what purpose?" Cllr Daley received the following
answer: “To ensure the security and safety of the KCC network,
there is continual electronic moni- toring of the e-mail system. “In terms of individuals' ac- counts, between 2013 and 2015, over the past three years, KCC has monitored 108 employee accounts. There have been no requests to monitor any members' accounts. “Kent County Council's ICT Ac- ceptable Use policy reserves the right for KCC to monitor the use of its ICT
systems. As part of this, em- ployees are advised that emails may be disclosable and they are re- minded that emails on a KCC ac- count are not private. “Access to accounts will have
been either to establish whether an investigation into a matter is re- quired or as part of an ongoing in- vestigation to help determine whether there has been any con- duct of concern.” Cllr Cooke added: “These num-
bers are remarkably low given the number of people who are em- ployed by the council. “We have to obey strict require-
ments from our HR and legal de- partments to make sure it is done in the properway.”
