Vicar’s Picnic festival to get Reef as its headliners

ONE of Britain’s most exciting Britpop bands, Reef, will be hot- footing it to Yalding fromWemb- ley Stadium to headline this year’s niche music festival, The Vicar’s Picnic.

Drawn up on the back of beer

mats in 2012, the festival was de- signed as a social enterprise to raise money for local charities – and as a tonic for locals who missed out on Glastonbury tickets. Since then, it has become one of

Kent’s fastest-growing festivals for music fans and now covers two days of entertainment, offering on- site camping and family fun. Reef (pictured), who rose to prominence with a string of hits and a number one album in the late 90s and are currently part-way through a UK tour supporting Coldplay, is the festival’s biggest coup so far. The band includes Jesse Wood,

son of Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood and husband of Fearne Cotton. Other acts this year include an exclusive acoustic set from Cast’s John Power and Jay Lewis of The La’s, featuring songs from both

band’s back catalogues; the fast-ris- ing incendiary punk-folk singa- longs of Skinny Lister and the ever-popular CocoAnd The Butter- fields. The Vicar’s Picnic, so-called be-

cause of its origins in Vicarage Road four years ago, takes place on two stages in The Lees, on the banks of the Medway, on July 15 and 16. Festival organiser Dave King

said: “The heart and philosophy of our gathering is to bring a great time to the whole family, with a unique edge of cool and creative

fully entertained in a safe, fun en- vironment – especially where the majority of entertainment is free – it offers the best way for the adults to relax and be able to enjoy an amazing festival, safe in the knowl- edge that the kids are happy too.”
