walk to work KENT could become a pioneer for active travel, if a county council strategy to make walking and cy- cling a more realistic option gets on the road. The initiative comes into force as statistics from Kent County Coun- cil suggest nine out of ten residents do notwalk to work. KCC believes its Active Travel Strategy will help tackle the county’s growing congestion crisis, improve residents’ health, reduce pollution and boost the local econ- omy. It is now asking for comments on

the strategy, which it says will in- fluence transport and development decisions in future. The authority acknowledges it

will need to address some of the major things that stop people leav- ing their cars at home, such as con- venience, the need to carry bulky loads. In Kent, says KCC, only one in 10 people walk to work, one in 100 cycle and only half of adults meet the recommended level of physical activity. Download the draft strat- egy and questionnaire at www.kent.gov.uk/activetravel or request a copy by leaving a mes- sage on 03000 421553. The consul- tation runs until July 13.

Mayor sworn in with flag-waving crowds

MAIDSTONE’S new mayor, Cllr Derek Butler, has been sworn in at a civic reception held in the town centre. His wife Mary will be Cllr But-

ler’s mayoress during his year in of- fice.

Cllr Butler’s election as mayor

was followed by a civic parade through the town centre to All Saints Church. Crowds thronged the streets to

watch the horse-drawn mayoral carriage pass by. The ceremonial landau is a former State carriage owned by the third son of Queen Victoria and now part of the collec- tion at the Tyrwhitt Drake Museum of Carriages in Mill Street. The parade was led by 36 Engi-

neer Regiment and the Queen’s Gurkha Engineers. A wide range of community groups also took part, including the Royal British Legion, Royal Naval Association, Merchant Navy Sea- farers Association, Maidstone Nepalese Community (GurkhaVet- erans), Scouts, Cadets and the British Red Cross. Cllr Butler (67)
