GLORIOUS GOODWOOD O

ne of the highlights of the Summer Season, the Qatar Goodwood Festival is the

place to see and be seen. Set high on the South Downs, Goodwood is widely regarded as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and King Edward VII once famously described the event as a ‘garden party with racing tacked on.’

The Festival combines top-class international horse racing with a relaxed atmosphere, where guests can enjoy 13 Group races across the five- day event with prize money totalling over £4.5 million, including the £1 million Qatar Sussex Stakes in which the world’s best horses compete for top honours.

The Festival opens on Tuesday with a seven-race card including two Group 2 contests – the Qatar Vintage Stakes and Qatar Lennox Stakes.

The Wednesday highlight is the Qatar

Sussex Stakes, won in the past by horses such as Frankel, the highest rated flat horse of all time. First run in 1841, the race is typically a clash of generations,

In the Magnolia Cup, a charity race for lady riders, the jockey’s silks are created by high-profile designers who have in the past included Vivian Westwood, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen and Roksanda.

Friday is a feast for racing fans, with four Group races taking place including the Qatar King George Stakes – a five-furlong sprint where the fastest horses can reach speeds in excess of 35mph. For the ladies, a best-dressed competition is the perfect excuse to put on their finest attire. Last year the winner enjoyed an all-expenses-paid trip to South Africa.
