The Great Pacific Northwest YOUR FISHING REPORTS • STORIES & EDUCATION FOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND COAST OF OREGON

Charleston, OR. ~ Happy April everyone! Well another month has passed and we are fi nally starting to see some breaks in the rough winter weather. I know summer is close when

Betty Kay Charters is up and running for the season, it’s al- ways great to see them out there. Our local charters(Coos Bay)

and quite a few fi shermen and women headed out into the deep blue ocean this past weekend and brought in some decent numbers of rockfi sh and a few lingcod. T e bite was good but defi nite-

ly not hot. It seems like whenever there is a weather system it al- ways takes a short period, maybe 24 to 48 hours or so, for things to settle down and return to nor- mal. If you get out there on a nice day keep in mind that its migra- tion time for several species of whales and if you are fortunate enough you just may see some! Crabbing was a hit or miss deal

and it seemed like you were ei- ther on them or you weren’t. In the bay several boats reported limits of perch and several rock- fi sh along with decent crabbing. On the docks the crabbing

turned hot early in the week and several happy crabbers had their fi ll of seafood. We have some pretty good low tides coming up this weekend, not minus tides but still pretty good for clam- ming. Today we are going to contin-

ue our series on cool critters that you can fi nd on the docks in the Charleston Marina. T is week we’re talking about the Owl Lim-

pet which derives its name from the owl shaped discoloration in- side its shell. A couple fi shermen were scraping off the bottom of an old boat this week and I got a chance to see the stuff growing on the underside before they did so (hey you have your hobbies and I have mine, don’t judge me). T e owl limpet lives from North- ern Mexico to Southern Alaska but isn’t really seen in any substantial numbers North of California. Fa- voring vertical surfaces and low water depths the owl limpet is a home-body that ventures out to forage for algae and then returns home each day. It fi nds its way back by following its slime trail that it leſt behind. Owl limpets are the largest spe-

cies of limpet on the West coast and at a size of up to 4 inches across will not tolerate other lim- pets, anemones, and some bar- nacles from encroaching on their territory. T ese limpets will push

away the invaders with the back- side of their shell and if a small invader does try to set up camp the limpet will slide over it and

of the oldest lived with some samples being observed at over 20 years old. So the ones on the dock today will be there for years to come. I hope you take the opportu- nity to see some of our and your amazing wildlife here in Charles- ton and on the coast of Northern California We’ll see you out there!

tear it apart with its radula. T e radula is a super sharp rasp like fi xture in the front of its mouth that it uses for scraping off the algae it eats. An ironic side note to this is

that sometimes one or more of these invading species will grow on the back of the limpet and there isn’t a dang thing they can do about it. In the picture you see here there is a large acorn barnacle and several smaller ones doing just that thing. T ese limpets, the largest of the Pacifi c variants are also one

JOKES & Humor # 6 We were standing in line outside a busy restaurant. The harried hostess was checking to fi nd out how many people were in each group. “Party of two,” the woman behind us said to her, “and could we please have Michelle?”

Annoyed looks turned to knowing smiles when she added, “Michelle is my daughter, and just once in my life I want her to wait on me!”
