Sebastopol, CA. ~ Tere is nothing more refreshing than taking time to take a break and relax for a few hours. I have to admit that lately I’ve not just completely just stopped and done something brand new. Just a little over a year ago, the Upbeat Times met An- drew Patterson, owner of Teta Wave Float Spa in Sebastopol. Andrew runs a unique business that is all about taking care of ‘you’ plus a little extra in the world of science. Aſter hearing about his business, my curios- ity was piqued. Te main purpose in my

mind was to relax. I did just that. I asked if I could also do a story about the experience and he gratefully accepted. His advice was that I start out with the float spa, second, a hour massage, and third, the ‘light experience’. Aſter you have read this story and if you decide to

go to experience the experi- ence, I will let Andrew explain the scientific details of the float spa and the ‘light experience’. It would take up pages if I decid- ed to explain it to you. My experience was new for

sure. In the middle of nice room with wood walls, relax- ing lights, a private shower(you must take a complete shower before and aſter) and fresh tow- els is a large space-looking egg shaped white domed tank filled with a foot of water. It sort of reminded me of a human sized pod made for deep space travel. Andrew first explains how

the tank works, what to do and that they are filled with a water solution that has tons of ebson salts also know as Magnesium sulfate. Magnesium sulfate is an inorganic salt containing magnesium, sulfur and oxygen, and in fact, there is so much that a person floats. As Andrew

jokes, there is tons of it in there. As we all know, when we have aches and pains the old remedy was to soak your aching part in warm water & EBSON SALTS for an hour.

Andrew says,

“Flotation therapy is a great way to relax and unwind the mind and the body, at the same time triggering parts of your brain that are not normally used due to the lack of sensory input. For some reason the act of floating suppresses the leſt side of your brain – which is the keeper of time, and lets the right side come out and play – which is the visual and creative side. Interesting things will happen once you let go. 80% of your brains daily functions are to counteract the never end- ing affect of gravity. When your brain doesn’t have to focus on that task, you can focus it on something else that needs at- tention, such as pain, stress,

mental status, etc.” Aſter entering the tank, clos-

ing the lid and turning off the light, my personal goal was to relax and to breathe. It’s com- pletely dark. Te gravity is tak- en off of your body. You lay flat on your back with what feels like lying on a bed of jelly, so to speak. Its water, but you liter- ally float. I’d never experienced anything like it! Te tempera- ture is around 95 or 96 degrees and it is absolutely quiet, unless you choose to listen to music, which Andrew can remotely set up or you can bring your own music with your electronic de- vice and plug it in. i.e. I-pod, phone etc. I decided and the ambient sounds of a forest with a small waterfall running con- tinuously…water and water. Just right. With my high rate of fast and

continuous life experiences running the paper and raising a family, I found the silence at first to be foreign, but within 10 minutes I was in to it. I felt my body moving around but in one direction, almost as if the way the earth rotates, my body kept moving back to the same place. Even though the water was only 12 inches deep, I nev- er touched the bottom. Te en- tire float lasts for 1 hour. I was surprised the hour went so fast,

Weird Facts & Fun Trivia - 4

The largest clam ever record- ed was found in Okinawa in 1956, it weighed 750 pounds.
