Form a long-lasting love affair with a local taxi company so that your guests are given preferential treatment. Invite taxi drivers in for a cup of tea if they’re passing and nurture a relationship which will benefit you, the taxi company and your guests.
Remember little guests and have a supply of children’s books and toys available for guests to borrow – offer these when your guests arrive or make it clear that they’re available if the small people get bored.
Keep a ‘discounts’ pinboard where you can display offers that are currently running at nearby attractions or restaurants so your guests can bag a bargain.
If you are aware that your guests are staying with you for a special occasion, try to go the extra mile: offer newly-weds breakfast in bed, leave a small present in a room if it’s a birthday (it could be as simple as a bar of chocolate and a card) or a balloon and a party popper.
Look into the possibility of adding extras to your offer – maybe you could provide picnic lunches or a dinner service if you have enough notice. If possible, use local produce and tell your guests where the food they are eating is from.
Try to leave locally-produced snacks in rooms: you may be able to do a deal with a local bakery or bake your own cookies or biscuits to leave for guests. Thoughtful touches like this mean so much more than mainstream packaged biscuits.
Keep extra toiletries on hand in case your guests forget theirs – always have extra shampoo, toothbrushes and paste and razors on hand. Similarly, have a spare ironing board, iron and hair dryer available in case a guest needs them.
And, most importantly of all, always be nice. Even if your guests are being anything but!
