year, which when I think about it, does not seem to have been nearly that long. For the most part it has been enjoyable, despite the long hours. Many of those hours were not necessary unless you wanted a total understanding of the maritime world. I feel that is what is needed if you are going to dis- cuss or write with some idea of the subject. How many today fail to have an understand- ing of the subject they are discussing? There is not a facet of this industry I do not enjoy learning about. I am sure I did not need to know the details of the Royal Navy during the French Revolution; the explorers that crawled all over the planet fi nding those yet to be discovered lands, especially the Arctic and Antarctic; or really anything not pertain- ing to Maine’s maritime history. When one gets to know Maine’s involvement around the globe, you never know what you might need to know as Maine men and vessels traveled all over.

As it is often said, if you like what you do, it is not work. I do not care what job you do there is always something about it that one would prefer not to do. In my world there are some that would not like the long hours on the road, but that is what gets you out and about visiting with the people and that more than makes up for it. Others would not care for the nights in hotels. The only part I would like to eliminate is taking the interviews off tape (now digital) and getting everything ready for press, but that is what makes us different, we get out and cover the coast. What I think will take a couple of hours, turns into whole days, but in the end it is the right way to do it. As the digital
world changes and the younger generations get older what changes do we need to make to stay ahead of the technological curve. One of the most obvious changes in the 29 years is the classifi eds, which is continuously shrinking. My concern is the editorial aspect and staying up with what is the preferred way to disseminate it.
I can live with this winter. We have had some cold nights, but for the most part it has not been too bad. I was able to work outside shingling right through Christmas. I should have been a little smarter and I would have had the big woodstove all hooked up so I could have worked inside. I wanted to get it all set up so I could go back building half-hull and half-models, but there will be next year. There are also a couple of small boats around that need major repairs, like two Beetle Cats. Never enough time. When Christmas comes around I like nothing better than sitting home reading and documenting. However this year, and I should have been before, a little more family oriented, Ann and I head south to celebrate my mother’s 85th
birthday. That almost did
not happen as she was in an automobile ac- cident when something broke in her car and after hitting the left then right guard rails the car rolled over twice and came to rest on its roof. Someone came up to the car and asked my mother if she was okay and she said, “Oh, I am fi ne.” Yes, hanging upside down kept in place with her seat belt and she had to wait for the fi re department to get her out the back window. All she had was bruises, which was extremely lucky. You never know when your time is up and we all should live like there is no tomorrow!
