W. I. Adams has rebuilt and enlarged the schooners EMMA W. DAY, 81 tons. There are three vessels on the stocks at East Boothbay, two of which will be launched before January 1. Waldoboro District.


In the yards of the Waldoboro district unusual activity has been noticeable. A total of 37 documented vessels has been built, of which seven were schooners, three steamers and the remainder sloops. The heavy vessels were all schooners, and were built as follows: One of 2240 tons, George L. Wett, Waldoboro; two of 2125 and 1362 respectively. Cobb, Butler & Co., Rockland; one, 1062 tons, Washburn Bros., Thomaston; one, 1211 tons, Dunn & Elliott, Thomaston; one, 172 tons, R. K. Snow, Rockland. W. A. Morse of Friendship has built eight sloops, of which fi ve were 16, nine, fi ve, nine, and seven tons each and the remaining three, six tons each. C. A. Morse of Friendship has launched three sloops of seven tons each, and three others of fi ve, fi ve and 12 tons.


Other sloops built were: C. E. Carter, Bremen, nine tons; A. K. Carter, Bremen, ten tons; Norris Carter, Bremen, eight tons; Eugene McLain, Bremen, ten tons;


R. E. McLain, Bremen, seven tons; J. W. Cushman, Friendship, five tons; C. Callamore, Bremen, six tons; C. Winchenbach, Waldoboro, seven tons; A. F. Morse, Cushing, six tons; W. H. Francis, Bristol, 11 tons; A. Thompson, Bristol, ten tons; Rawson Carter, Bristol, six tons; E. F. Leeman, Bristol, six tons; A. & M. Gammage, Bristol, built a schooner of 38 tons. Three steamers were launched; W. A. Moody, St. George, 107 tons; Spear Bros., Bristol, fi ve; Damariscotta S. B. Co., 21. On the Penobscot.


In the Belfast district H. M. Bean of Camden has built two schooners, one four masts, 758 tons, the other fi ve mast, 2000. George A. Gilchrist of Belfast has launched one schooner, four masts, 745 tons. A steamer built by Robert P. Coombs of Islesboro, measured 14 tons. Carleton, Norwood & Co. of Rockport have built one schooner, 512 tons. George A. Gilchrist is building a government dredger to launch next spring while H. M. Bean has a contract to build a fi ve-masted schooner in the spring. There promises to be a revival of the shipbuilding industry in the Bangor district the coming year. Although no vessels have been launched this season, E. & I. K. Stetson of Bangor will construct a 1,000- ton schooner of four masts at their yard in Brewer this winter. Plans for a two-masted schooner are being considered by T. F. Cassidy & Son of Bangor. An excursion steamer 120 feet in length is building in the Barbour yard at Brewer. She will be launched and ready for the summer business. The schooner, ANNIE P. CHASE, was practically rebuilt the past summer and fall in the Stetson yard at Brewer.


McKay & Dix at Bucksport have


launched the fi ve-masted schooner, JOHN W. PAUL, JR., 1652 tons, in the Castine district. She is said to be the smallest fi ve- masted schooner afl oat. The reason for putting in so many masts is that her sails being smaller they can be handled more readily. She will differ from all other vessels of her number of masts in having a spike bowsprit. The fi rm may build other vessels next year. J. J. Billings of Deer Isle has built the sloop, EVANELIA, seven tons, this year. The Work Down East. In the district of Frenchman’s bay a


sloop of 11 tons has been built by Harvey Hodgkins and O. D. Wentworth of Marlboro. A small fi shing schooner of six tons has been
