Weymouth, N. S., to Portland. The tug CLARA CLARITA, Capt. Alfred Sorensen is well known in Bangor, having been here last fall with Capt. Sorensen’s wrecking lighter TRILBY, removing the sunken span of the railroad bridge, which lay in the river just below the toll bridge. While here tha craft had a number of visitors who were interested in this style of vessel. The little boat is an ocean going tug and on eof the most powerful now afl oat as well as one of the fastest. A Portland paper has the following concerning her: “The tug CLARA CLARITA is now lying at the end of Long wharf. This is a craft which has a gallant history and has participated in many praiseworthy deeds. Capt. Sorensen is the regular commander of her, but he is absent this trip on a visit to Boston. The captain was recently awarded a medal for taking the crew off the Standard Oil Co.’s barge ASTRAL, which was ashore on Mt. Desert. He also has many other medals for his numerous heroic achievements in times past, one of which

came from the U. S. government. “As soon as the bad weather clears,

the CLARA CLARITA will go to Seal rock and try to raise the schooner ALICE M. DAVENPOR which went ashore there about four months ago with a cargo of British coal. Several attempts were made by this tug during the fall of 1902 to raise the DAVENPORT but without success. Her mainmast was taken out and there was talk of blowing her up to let the cargo out when it was thought that she would come to the top of her own accord. Capt. McGown, part owner, however, still has hopes of raising the craft, which sunk on her maiden trip.

which cost $35,000.

BARTLETT, Sproul, Ship Island for Vera Cruz with lumber, went ashore on the Mexican coast January 26 and is considerably damaged. The BARTLETT is a threemasted schooner and is owned by F. W. Ayer & Co. and commanded by Capt. H. F. Sproul of Winterport. She was built in Brewer around 1890 by E. & I. K. Stetson.

Capt. Sproul has just constracted for a new threemasted schooner at Milbridge and work has begun on her. She will be launched next summer of fall. To Raise the DAVENPORT. Capt. McKown, owner of the schooner ALICE M. DAVENPORT, which on her maiden voyage was wrecked off Seal Island, near Vinalhaven has arrived at Rockland on the Sorenson tug, CLARA CLARITA, from Boothbay via Vinalhaven and Seal Island. With him was his son Capt. Leroy McKown, captain of the JACOB M. HASKELL, the “king of the seas,” Diver Moran and a crew. The purpose is to raise the sunken schooner

They had gone directly to the scene of the wreck from Boothbay Friday and found the spot marked by the foremast sticking out of the water. All the other masts had disappeared.

Capt. McKown after the schooner sunk employed Capt. Sorenson to raise her, but after fastening chains about her and several other kinds of rescue work, abandoned the job. Now Capt. McKown is going to raise her and fl oat her to Rockland. Aboard the CLARA CLARITA is one of the fi nest air pumps made and seven rubber and canvas bags – each 16 feet long and eight feet wide – which will be placed by the divers in her hold and infl ated. They are guaranteed to raise 100 tons. The tug went out to the scene Saturday, taking their lighter which is at Vinalhaven. Capt. McKown is confi dent that he can fl oat her and tow her to Rockland.
