February 2016 MAINE COASTAL NEWS Page 11. D.E.L.A. Director's Report

From the Director – It is now offi cially winter in Maine! The temperature this evening is going to be down around zero and ten degrees with a wind chill that is brutal. The gale warning advisories are posted for mariners for the next few days. Let the fun begin! Let’s look on the bright side; the skiers and snowmobilers are happy now.

The trade shows are starting for the 2016 season. January 22 – 24 is the Annual Weekend and Trade Show for the Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association. This is a great weekend get-away for those that would like to participate in the festivities. They have a lot going on and the show is also Free Admission. They will be at the Seacrest Beach Hotel in North Falmouth, MA. For more info, visit www.lobstermen. com.

Living in Maine, I fi nd it hard to go anywhere for a weekend in January and leave our house unattended. It is always the time of the year when the pipes freeze if the water isn’t fl owing on a regular basis. We have had that happen before! You might say that we live in a cabin in the woods… The Maine Fishermen’s Forum is scheduled for March 3 – 6 at the Samoset Resort in Rockport. We are pleased to

announce that Capt. Keith Colburn of the F/V WIZARD and the TV show, Deadliest Catch will be returning this year. Capt. Keith had such a good time at the last Forum that he attended, that he wanted to come back and join us again. This is a great weekend visit for the entire family and if you are more interested in a day trip, the admission is also free.

The Downeast Lobstermen’s Association will be sponsoring Jim Manning’s E-molt seminar, which is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. It is always a pleasure to work with Jim. We will also have our booth there so you can come by and say “Hello” and tell a story or two. This is always a time when we love to see everyone. We have seen generations coming up through at this point in time. We will be celebrating D.E.L.A.’s 25th

year! This is the

length of time for a generation to grow up knowing all of us. When I came along, back in 2004, a lot of the “little guys and gals” are all grown up and working their own boats now!

The Canadian/US Town Meeting is right after the Forum, which follows the Boston Seafood Show.

This is scheduled

for March 11 – 12 at the Westin Hotel in Portland. This meeting is sponsored by the

Lobster Institute of the University of Maine in Orono.

Fishing families are invited to participate

in Aquaculture Training! This new course is available to commercial fi shermen and others interested in learning more about getting into aquaculture.

The fi rst class

is scheduled for Thursday, January 28th in Thomaston.

“Helping fi shermen grow

seafood as well as catching it, is one way to increase options for those who make their living from the sea,” according to Dana Morse with Maine Sea Grant. If you are interested, contact Dana at 207-563-8186, dana.morse@maine.edu. So, I don’t think that you could possibly be bored this winter and spring! There is a lot going on. If you went to everything, you probably wouldn’t get your gear ready for the up-coming season.

D.E.L.A. welcomes aboard a new

member, Young’s Lobster Pound in Belfast. Welcome aboard, Raymond, Katrina, Diane and Family! We had our D.E.L.A. Board of

Director’s Meeting last Thursday at Jasper’s in Ellsworth. Thank you to Rep. Walter Kumiega for attending the meeting and discussing the LD 1503 Lobster Licensing bill with us. We had a good crowd and a good working meeting with discussion about this bill. If you are interested in reading the bill, please contact me and I can send it to you through e-mail attachment. The scheduled hearing for LD 1503 is February 10th Marine Resource Committee chambers in

at the

Augusta. This bill is of specifi c interest to you if you are an apprentice on the waiting list.

The bill also discusses the length of time for the student licenses, possibly extending from 18 to 23 years of age as long as you are a full time student. If you can not make it to Augusta to speak, feel free to contact D.E.L.A. and let us know what you like or dislike about the bill. We are here to represent our membership and our lobster industry. Once again, our contact is dassatt711@yahoo.com or 207 338-1406. D.E.L.A. now has an opportunity for you to make a donation on line if you would like to help support our work in the industry. It is very simple to do. Christy has been working on the website and adding a lot of positive additions to help you stay in touch with us. Our website is downeastlobstermen.org if you would like to take a look. Perhaps you have pictures to share with us as an addition to our archives. If you would like to become more involved with the future of our industry, think about becoming a member of our Board of Directors. Our membership extends to the entire Coast of Maine now, which has changed since we were founded in 1991. We originally represented Hancock and Washington Counties. We came on board because we wanted to become part of the solution and help make a difference for our future generations.

The generational

change is starting to happen now! We look forward to hearing from you. Take care, Sheila
