This £5 ‘Orange’ lettered B-E is not really ridiculous, rather it is disgraceful ! You see I know that it was previously sold on the internet as being genuine and of course it appears to be a wonderful paper-fold printing error. One could easily be forgiven for failing to appreciate that this is an elaborately created ‘ruse’ of a probably relatively modern forgery on genuine watermark paper and with large part original gum. Now how was this achieved ? Most would expect this stamp to have been bleached, printed design added and then re-gummed. The answer for this forger was to take a genuine mint original gum British postal fiscal SG F10 watermark anchor … and probably to let sunshine bleach the reddish-lilac colour out (although traces are still visible of the design under magnification) - print a laser printed image of the £5 orange directly onto the paper after making a small tear at the top and folding the paper over so that the printed image at the top of the stamp appears on the reverse. There’s still more to be learnt by a keen ‘forensic’ collector - how/at what stage was the Perf 15½ x 15 postal fiscal ‘converted’ to the correct Perf 14 of the £5 orange? Of course the design ‘give-away’ comes under high power magnication as the laser image comprises a dotted ‘photographic’ screen and a fuzzier appearance than a genuine engraved £5 Orange … but - good enough to deceive the unwary that this was a real mint large part original gum £5 orange potentially worth £1,000’s with unique paper fold during printing error small part printed on reverse! Diagonal reverse crease, perf fault and the intentional tear to throw a buyer off the scent. Extraordinay forgery, estimated accordingly, which goes to show that buying stamps of this value off the internet from trusted and guaranteed sources is essential. Low internet ‘feedback’ and short longevity established internet accounts should be treated with great caution (1) US2 PH Plate 31 ...................................................... £392
