Forthcoming Events

By Keith Nicol

The festive season is well and truly upon us and in Spain that means not one but two celebrations, for our traditional Christmas and Boxing Day and the Spanish Reyes Magos or the Kings Day or three wise men, which falls on January 6th.

The three Wise Men or Kings will arrive on the Coast in style on the evening of January 5th, as both Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa stage their own parades. The Procession of the Kings through the streets of Orihuela Costa usually departs at 5pm from Nicolas de Bussy Street, behind the school, and finishes at at Zenia Boulevard, where the reception of the Kings will take place. This event is fairly new to the area and everyone is looking forward to a magnificent reception at the Commercial Centre but it’s starting point is subject to change.

birth of the baby Jesus takes place followed by the official parade, which goes from the church, to Ramon Gallud, and from there to the Inmaculada Square where the Kings dismount from their floats before addressing the crowd and wishing everyone a Happy New Year.

Hundreds of kilos of sweets are tossed to the waiting crowd on route and it’s a fun filled couple of hours on route. After the Parade, the Kings proceed into the Town Hall and throw more sweets and gifts from the balcony before an official reception inside with the Mayor and councillors. It’s a fun filled, traditional Spanish event that should be enjoyed by everyone, of all nationalities. Don’t forget to wrap up warmly and bring a bag to store your sweets in. Many other local towns and villages also hold their own Magic Kings parades, so check out your local town hall website for details of their festivities.

And if looking behind you and hissing and booing is the thing that must be done every festive season, not to worry as the Rojales Pantomime group are putting on their version of Humpty Dumpty at the Escuela de Musica y Cultura in Los Montesinos on the evenings of Thursday January 14th and Friday 15th at 7.30pm with a matinee on Saturday 16th at 2.30pm. Tickets are 7€ for adults and 3€ for children. Information and reservations from Mandy or Cyril on 966 712 820 or 685 302 529.

The tradition route of the Kings will be followed in Torrevieja, with the kings and their supporters arriving by boat into the fishing zone behind the fairground at around 5.30pm. From here they make their way to the Corazon Church where an enactment of the
