Hi All! Dave Wilkinson, aka “Dave the Hat”, has firmly established himself on the local music scene here in Torrevieja and the surrounding area in the couple of years since he made the move to Spain. Dave is what I would call a “veteran” musician.
He started playing guitar at the tender age of nine (47 years ago - Oops, sorry Dave, maybe too much information! Lol). By 16 years of age he was playing in gigging bands, writing his own songs and performing around the Bedford area where he lived.
One of his musical highlights during this period was supporting the band “New Order”. It was only in recent months that he received a recording of this particular gig from an old friend. Looking back on this momentous occasion made Dave feel like he was “time travelling”!
When Dave was in his early 20s, he embarked on some brief tours of Europe and the U.S.A with a gospel rock band. Dave also found time in between his performing to do studio work, writing and producing songs for an independent record label. This musical maestro (like many of us) married and settled down to raise a family. He then made the decision to take a regular job and make music his weekend “escape”!
He performed in bars and clubs around the Midlands. In conversation with Dave he quoted the great John Lennon remarking how - ‘life is what happens when you are busy making other plans’. Then, more recently, the opportunity of moving to Spain came along and Dave knew in his heart that he had a good chance of “earning a crust” as a solo musician. With this opportunity, came the challenge of playing solo acoustic gigs... Something he had never done before. He doesn’t use backing tracks as he feels more comfortable, and likes the creative freedom of “going with the flow” during his performances. He has witnessed his gigs getting more popular and he has got progressively busier as time goes on.
Dave the Hat, along with Bud Street (Bass Guitarist) and drummer Mike Reilly came up with the concept of the “Big Jam” session, where local, and passing musicians could come together and share, whilst performing their musical experiences. This gathering is held at Reflections Bar, San Luis, Torrevieja every Sunday from 4pm - 7pm. It is a very entertaining time for both musicians and punters alike. This project was started in February of this year and has gone from strength to strength. In fact, it is more than advisable to arrive earlier to ensure a seat. So, if you haven’t already heard Dave the Hat perform - watch the local press for his forthcoming appearances. Or, alternatively, call into Reflections any Sunday. All that is left now, is for me to wish each and every one of you a very merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous New Year.
Bye for now, D.P.
