Councilwarning for teenage yob

ANEAST Malling yob who made residents’ lives a misery for sev- eral months has been warned by Tonbridge and Malling Council not to continue his behaviour. The council used new powers to

issue the 16-year-old with a com- munity protectionwarning, one of the first to be served in Kent. The warning, part of a package designed to tackle anti-social be- haviour, means that if the teenager, who cannot be named for legal rea- sons, does not mend his ways, a community protection notice can be issued. Breaching this is a crim- inal offence and could result in a fine of up to £2,500. A stream of complaints began in

July from residents in the West Malling and Larkfield areas about the boy’s verbal abuse and riding a motorcycle in an anti-socialway. The warning was served follow-

ing an investigation by the council, Kent Police and Circle Housing Russet.

The boys’ parents were also is-

sued with a tenancywarning letter. Cllr Brian Luker, Tonbridge and Malling Council’s cabinet member for community safety, said: “Anti- social behaviour will not be toler- ated in this borough. I’m pleased that, by working closely with Kent Police and Circle Housing Russet, we have been able to issue this warning, which I hope will put a stop to this individual’s anti-social behaviour immediately.” Sgt Ashley Boxall of the commu-

nity safety unit said: “I am very pleased that the boy in this case has been issued with a community protection warning and hope it acts as a wake-up call for him to change hisways. “We are proud of our close working relationship with Ton- bridge and Malling Council and hope this sends a clear message to others who commit anti-social be- haviour that their actions will not be tolerated.”

Swimmers boost charity

MAIDSTONE Riverside Rotary Club has held its first SwimRelay at Maidstone Leisure Centre. With the support of the Maidstone Leisure Trust and Serco, which manages the pool, more than 100 swimmers in 24 teams were sponsored to swim as many lengths as possible in 30 minutes. Teams came from schools and clubs and ranged in age from seven to 90. They raised sponsorship from friends, families and colleagues, based on the number of lengths swum. Prizes were

awarded in several categories including most lengths and most money raised. The event is expected to have raised more than £7,000, half of which

will go to Children in Need, with the other half going to charities nominated by the participants. BBC Radio Kent presenter JohnWarnett was the commentator on the

day and prizes were presented byMP Helen Grant, who promised to swim herself next year and to try to enter a team of MPs. Event organiser Clive Bradburn said: “We are so pleased with the

fantastic response from the teams, both in the fundraising and their participation. We had most of our Rotary Club helping as officials and marshalls, along with some of their partners. We hope to see them all back next year.”
