MORE than 150 people attended a respiratory awareness day for pa- tients with lung conditions held by Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. The event at the academic centre
at Maidstone Hospital, was organ- ised by consultant respiratory physician Dr Syed Arshad Husain, with the help of the hospital’s re- search unit. The event was opened by the Deputy Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Derek Butler. The trust’s chief executive, Glenn Douglas, and medical director, Dr Paul Sigston also attended. Dr Husain said: “The patient feedback has been excellent.”
Flats approved
A PLAN to build a four-storey block of 14 apartments off Alexander Grove inKings Hill was approved by Tonbridge and Malling Council. The flats, which will have 30 parking spaces, will be sited near the Spitfire pub and Asda supermarket. The go-ahead was granted to Liberty Prop- erty Trust in 2011 but the de- veloper resubmitted the scheme after permission ex- pired in December last year.

A STAPLEHURST policewoman has been appointed Commander forWest Kent Division. Chief Superintendent Julia Chap-
man has served in the police for 23 years, primarily in the Maidstone and Medway areas. From 2010 to 2011 shewas Detec-
tive Chief Inspector for tactical and serious crime, based at Medway, then she spent a year asDCIforWest Division. From September 2012 to Septem-
ber 2014 she served as Superinten- dent for Medway and North Division and then spent a year as Su- perintendent in charge of strategic planning and tactical operations, in- cluding acting as Gold Commander
for Operation Stack. Chief Superintendent Chapman
said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the first few weeks in my new role and amvery pleased to have returned to West Division where I previously worked as a Detective Chief Inspec- tor. “I look forward to continuing the
work of my predecessor Chief Su- perintendent Steve Corbishley.” Chief Superintendent Corbishley
has been selected for the Police Na- tional Assessment Centre, which chooses future chief officers for the police service. The district commander for Maid-
stone remains Chief Inspector Mick Gardner.
Drugs and thefts charge man in court
A WATERINGBURY man found with drugs and stolen goods has ap- peared beforeMidKent Magistrates. Nathan Seal (32), of Bow Road, pleaded guilty to receiving stolen goods, production of cannabis, bur- glary, possession of heroin and going equipped for theft.

He admitted receiving a stolen handbag, make-up bag and wallet and was found with cannabis and diamorphine in his possession. He also admitted breaking into a
hair salon in Bow Road, Watering- bury, where he stole two pairs of hair straighteners, scissors, a till and
its contents worth £875. He had a holdall containing a hammer, torch, socks and baby wipes for use in con- nection with theft. Seal was sentenced to 120 days in prison, suspended for 12 months. Hemust pay £200 compensation, £85 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.
