CAREY Lander (33), whowas born and grew up in Maidstone and aended Maidstone Grammar School for Girls,was the keyboard player and backing vocalist with Scoish indie band Camera Obscura. She appeared on


four of the band’s five albums andwas widely recognised to have contributed greatly to a distinctive image and sound that assured the band of steady cult success. Careywas the daughter of Eileen


and Bob Lander. Her mother spent years as vicar of St Paul’s Church in Boxley Road and her family have thanked friends and fans for their support and donations to a Just Giving page established by Carey to raise funds to fight cancer. Carey got involved with the Glasgow


music scene after moving to the city in 2000 and joined Camera Obscura in 2002, making her debut on a John Peel session for BBC Radio One.Asecond line-up change in the band left Carey as a central member, and she remained in the line-up until her death. Their two most recent albums –My Maudlin Career and Desire Lines – reached the UK Top 40, and charted in the USA. In 2011 Careywas diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. The lack of awareness of the disease motivated her to raise funds and awareness to help fight the condition. Her appeal raised almost £50,000 during her lifetime with another £15,000 coming immediately after her death. Among the many tributes and articles


about Carey, The Scotsman newspaper noted of the band: “Their blend of pristine, emotive guitar pop and a lyricism which toys with themes of wry melancholy has ensured them a dedicated international following.” Carey’s parents added they had been “deeply moved by all the gifts and messages” given to her fundraising campaign.” Carey leaves her partner Kenny Macleod, Camera Obscura’s sound engineer, her parents and her many fans.


Fred Ridgway


FREDERICK “Fred” Ridgway (92) lived in Barming for 60 years and forged a national and international reputation as a fast bowler, playing for Kent, England and a Commonwealth touring side. Born in Stockport, Cheshire, Fred’s sporting skills included a spell as a teenage footballer signed to Stockport County before enlistment in the Royal Marines


brought him to Deal, where he served as a PT instructor in thewar. Fred married Kathleen, and settled locally


in Deal and Ramsgate. He played for and at times captained a strong Tovil and Bridge Mills team when hewas still a talented fast swing bowler and later mostly batted for St

Luke’s CC, Maidstone, and kept wicket. He played for Kent Cricket Club for 16


years, between 1946 and 1962. In total Fred took 1,069 first-class wickets at an average of 23.74. Hewas one of the few cricketers to


achieve the feat of taking four wickets in four successive balls, playing away for Kent at Derbyshire in 1951. Hewas also a useful lower order batsman and excellent fielder. He made his England debut in 1951, eventually taking seven wickets in five tests while touring India and Pakistan. He also toured the same two countries with a Commonwealth side. Fredwas also a skilled footballer and


played for Ramsgate in the Kent League. Hewas father to Barbara and Linda. Daughter Linda said: “Wemoved to Maidstone in 1955 where Dadwent on to work locally in the paper industry. He worked atAylesford Paper Mill, Tovil and Bridge Mill as a production planner and finally at Reed Transport, where he retired in 1987. “Dadwas always active; he played darts, billiards and golf. He could turn his hand to most things and play itwell. Hewas in a darts team called the Old Folks Four who played against local pub teams to raise money for elderly people. Hewas very sociable, never forgot his Cheshire roots and always enjoyed a beer and a chat.” Fred leaves his wife of 71 years, Kathleen, daughters, grandchildren Chris, Robbie, Laura and Kate and great-grandchildren Leo and Gabriel.Athird great-grandchild is expected in December.


Sheila “Lee” Field


SHEILA “Lee” Field (59) – formerly O‘Shea – lived in Saltings Road, Snodland. Shewas born Sheila Jones in Lewisham, London moving to Taylor Road, Snodland in 1963 and attending St Katherine’s and Holmesdale schools. She had various jobs


prior to her marriage: as an au pair in TunbridgeWells, at Medway Bonding in Maidstone and Reed’s in New Hythe. Lee had three


children from her first marriage: Jason and twins Kym and Aaron. After her divorce she worked at Night Freight delivering parcels, where she met her second husband Steve, a vehicle recovery driver who literally pulled her out of a ditch. Before her final illness Lee worked for


Volvo, delivering new cars throughout the country. Her friend Beryl Jones said: “Lee


was a loving daughter, wife, mother, sister and a good friend to many.” She leaves her husband, children, three stepchildren and six grandchildren.


David King


DAVID Arthur King (86), who has died in Redhill in Surrey, spent much of his life and most of his career in the local area. His homes in the area included living in Maidstone, Larkfield and Penenden Heath. Other than national service with the RAF in Reading, David spent his working life as a clerical officer with Kent County Council in its education department. Married in 1965 to Gladys, Davidwas


father to Susan and Andrew. Hewas also known locally from his involvement with St Luke’s Church and a love ofmusic that included singing in local choirs. Gladys died in 1985 and – after retirement


– David moved to Kendal in Cumbria in 1995. Daughter Susan said: “My father didn’t know anyone in Kendal but his love of the Lake District andwalking drew him there. “He married Hilary in 1999 and became step-father to Andrea and continued to be involved with his local church and follow his passion for classical music. People will remember him as a quiet, generous and very genuine man who took time to get to know people.” David had moved to Surrey to be near his daughter and son. He leaves his wife, children, step-daughter and grandchildren Corinne, Eddie and Annabel.


Ronald Godden


RONALDFrank Godden (80) of Langleywas well known from more than 50 years as a self- employed engineer. Prior to living 31 years in Langley he had


lived in Brooklands in Chatham Road,Ayles- ford and Sandling. Ronald learned his trade in the Army dur-


ing national service and returned home to es- tablish a noted local business in which his talents extended to machining and making car parts when the manufacturer’s own parts were unavailable. Ronald and his wife of more than 60 years, Rosemary raised children Marion and Paul. Marion said: “My father was a very giving person who would do anything for anybody. His love of his work meant he never wanted to stop and he was involved in everything from towing, spraying, welding, providing MOTs and the engineering work that allowed him to sort out all kinds of problems.” Ronald was still working in his 80th year.


He leaves his widow, children, five grand- children and 16 great-grandchildren.
