Where I live...

West Malling Parish Council Maceys Meadow The Applefest on Saturday, October 3 was a great success, especially with younger residents, who thoroughly enjoyed taking part in picking and mashing up the apples then watching them being juiced. Lee Edney, head chef from The Swan in West Malling, gave his verdict on the apple-themed dishes baked and presented by local residents. Type in Apple Fest West Malling on You Tube©

see some of the action. The Maceys Meadow Volunteer Group is currently working with the Kent Orchards for Everyone Project and would like to thank everybody who supported the event. More seasonal celebrations in and around Maceys Meadow are planned and will be announced in due course.

Dog fouling The parish council has received a number of reports of an increase in dog fouling in the cricket meadow, particularly along the fence line with the allotments, despite this being where there is a bright red bin for dog poo disposal. Please clean up after your dog; by not doing so you could face a fine of £70. Remember – Don’t Mess About – Bag it and Bin it for a cleaner environment.

Cold-calling control zone A cold-calling control zone has been set up in Nevill Court. As part of the scheme, residents are shown how to deal with bogus callers and rogue traders. They will expect any visitor to properly identify themselves and give a valid reason for their visit and, if not satisfied that the caller is genuine, they will know how to deal with the situation.

Planning Committee

West Malling Parish Council planning committee meeting. December 1 at 7.30pm in West Malling Primary School, Norman Road. Come and see the Church Centre planning application. This is your chance to comment directly and the parish council welcomes your views. The meeting is open to all residents of West Malling.

CCCZs have been a great success in many areas across Kent and WMPC is keen to support similar schemes in other areas of West Malling.

Local warden support officer West Malling was one of 24 parishes who expressed an interest in the pilot scheme run by KCC. An LWSO will work in their own community and provide information, guidance and support to a wide range of existing services and particularly to KCC community wardens. However, while West Malling parish was not invited to take part in the initial project it will continue to monitor the progress of the scheme with a view to joining in the future.

KCC community liaison Kent County Council has a team of community liaison officers who provide a link between local people and local organisations, including local councils, to help residents to have their say in shaping local services. These officers work with councillors at every level and will also arrange local community meetings where residents can discuss what matters to them. Our local officer is Anne Charman and you can contact her on 03000 416923.

KCC consultations KCC has a consultation directory on its website which lists KCC's past, current and planned consultations. These consultations cover local services and policies and their results influence policy-making at county level. Log onto the consultations.kent.gov.uk website to find out more.

Autumn safety A reminder that the days

are getting shorter and it can be obvious when a house is unoccupied. Use timers to switch on lights and radios (check the volume level) to give the impression that someone is home. And remember to talk to our local PCSO, Phillip Harrison, or call Kent Police on 101 if you spot someone or something that doesn’t seem quite right, including anything unusual in the countryside such as fly tipping and off- roading.

Brief notes The next farmers’ markets will be on Sunday, November 22 and Sunday, December 13 to harmonise with other seasonal events. Age Concern West Malling is hosting a retired men’s club on Thursday, November 26 from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at The Clout Memorial Institute in the High Street.

Finally please note that the parish clerk’s office in The Clout Memorial Hall has relocated to Suite 1 in the main building. To gain entry, you will need to buzz the keypad by the main entrance door on the High Street (the office is only open to callers between 11-12pm Monday to Thursday). Otherwise, it’s business as usual. Parish councillors can be contacted via the parish clerk, on 01732 870872 during office hours, or why not come to one of the monthly meetings in the Village Hall in Norman Road? Full details are available from the parish clerk’s office.

Don’t miss Dragon’s Den GROUPS will be vying for a share of

The money has been made available

by KCC Cllr Trudy Dean from her councillor’s community fund.
