To sir, with love
A BENCH has been placed on the village green at East Malling in memory of dedicated and much-loved teacher Douglas Rabjohn who is fondly remembered by generations of schoolchildren.
Mr Rabjohn, who died this year, aged 93, began work at St James’s School, East Malling in 1948, moving to Blacklands School in Mill Street when St James’s closed, where he taught until his retirement in 1985.
He was also a parish councillor in the 1960s.
Former pupils held lasting affection for him and many donated to the funding of the seat as a tribute to him. The bench is inscribed: “To the Wonderful Douglas Rabjohn 1921- 2015”, on the back rail and: “To Sir, with love” on the seat rail.
Bazaar Christmas Chapel Show Top of the shops
JOANNA Hall will be transforming the chapel barn at the Pilsdon at Malling Community with a festive treasure trove of crafts and gifts for the Bazaar Christmas Chapel Show.
For the first time the event is being held in December, from
Friday 11 to Sunday 20, at the historic chapel in Water Lane, West Malling. It will be open from 10am to 5pm and refreshments will be available.
Joanna has been working alongside crafts people in India for more than 19 years and Bazaar embraces rigorous Fairtrade principles.
Ten per cent of proceeds from Bazaar’s show sales are being given directly to the families in Nepal who Joanna works with. During a recent trip, she met the ladies who knit Bazaar’s goods in Bhaktapur, many of whom are homeless since the earthquake in April, and
distributed donations. Photographs and stories of the knitting ladies will be on display at the Christmas show and online donations can be made at

CONGRATULATIONS go to three West Malling shops who have won awards.
Monks Clothing of Swan Street has won a sought-after accolade in the fashion industry, having gained a desired Drapers Independents Award. The firm won the best new business category in the 2015 awards, having impressed the judges with its tailoring service and business acumen.
Monks sent store manager Alexandra Brooker along to the ceremony in London to collect the award as the owners, Amy Barker and Michael McMillan, were on honeymoon.
Located in the High Street, West Malling Flowers has added another award to its impressive collection. The shop was named Retail Florist of the Year in the British Florist Association Fleurex awards. The shop’s Heidi Lawley is a Chelsea Flower Show gold winner.
Earlier this year, Michelle Lane’s shoe shop, Soles with Heart, of Swan Street, took the title of Children’s Retailer of the Year and was highly commended in the Ladies Independent Retailer of the Year, awarded by the British Footwear Association.
