downsmail.co.uk Hospital cleans up its act
THE chief inspector of hospitals has given Maidstone Hospital a clean bill of health, after it was found to be failing in its efforts to control potentially lethal bacteria. Infection by Legionella bacteria
causes Legionnaires’ Disease – a po- tentially fatal form of pneumonia. Inspectors who visited the hospi-
tal in October last year found the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Trust to be in breach of the Health and Social Care Act 2008, in failing to ensure the quality and safety of its water supply.
Squash speed
COULD carved squash stop drivers speeding? Homeowners in East Malling resorted to using Halloween pumpkins at the side of the road to urge drivers to stick to the 20mph limit which was in- troduced in Chapel Street 18 months ago. The pumpkins were carved
with the 20mph speed limit, with other illuminated mes- sages including “Boo!”, towake drivers up to their speeds.
The failurewas revealed in the re-
view of surgical services, where the CQCinspection team visited a num- ber of areas of the hospital conclud- ing that the failure meant all areas of the hospital could be affected. Aspokesman said: “During the in- spection in October 2014 we asked for information and evidence that the registered provider had appro- priate systems in place to ensure that service users, persons employed for the purpose of carrying on the regu- lated activity and otherswhomaybe at risk of exposure, are protected
against identifiable risks of acquiring a healthcare-associated infection. “Our enquiries included the man- agement ofwater safety and quality at Maidstone Hospital and were specifically targeted at the manage- ment of Legionella. We were not provided with the necessary assur- ances or evidence relating to the sys- tems and processes the registered provider had put in place relating to water safety and quality.” A warning notice was served
which set out the grounds upon which the trustwas in breach of the
Another win for George
SNODLAND’S unbeaten welter- weight prospect George Hennon doubled his win tally with a points win over Ali Wyatt (4-29-2) at the Grays Civic Hall in Essex. George (21), a former English and
European kick-boxing champion be- fore making the switch to boxing, defeated his 32-year-old opponent from Torquay 39-37 on points. George (pictured) said: “I was re-
ally pleased withmy performance. I didn’t really waste much, I really
can’t see the round that I lost.” Clearly learning from his experi-
enced coaches Johnny and Frank Greaves, George wasted very few punches and got some good body shots in, during the opening round. He said: “I’ve got loads to work on
but from the previous fight, it was much better. In the fourth round I thought I’d step it up a bit. There were a couple of right hands over the top I thought I hurt him with and a couple of body shots as well.”

regulation. Wheninspectors from theCQCre-
turned in June, they found systems had been put in place to ensure com- pliance with the regulations, min- imising the risk of infection. They also found “an area of outstanding practice”. Professor Sir Mike Richards, chief inspector of hospitals, reported: “The development of the estates dashboard as a system for collating required tasks for all systems across the trustwas an outstanding piece of work.”
