Nature + Creativity: The Power of Play in Creating Innovative Thinkers

Many schools today have playgrounds that lack the inspiring sense of wonder and discovery that is found in nature… In this session we will explore how outdoor educational spaces can accomplish more than just recess or physical education. From outdoor classrooms, growing gardens, water gardens, archaeological “digs”, spaces for quiet reflec- tion and stimulating play equipment, learn how utilizing the outdoors as an extension of the learning space benefits the whole child and im- proves teachers’ satisfaction too. We will cover research-based design strategies that have been implemented at all levels of K-12 education – showing that a sense of play, wonder, and discovery is essential and restorative for all ages.

Implementing a Green Curriculum: Strategies and Success Stories

Sustainability is being implemented into K-12 curriculum and being tied to state standards at all grade levels across California. Our students are actively engaged in addressing environmental issues in their schools and communities. Though often the ties to science standards are emphasized, green curriculum bridges across all subject areas, encourages holistic thinking and offers opportunities for creative

problem solving. Community engagement, service projects and service learning are an essential elements of green curriculum and give students the opportunties to address real world problems. The panel brings together teachers that are implementing green curriculum from several California school districts. Each panelist will briefly describe their individual perspective and experiences. Each statement will include the panelist’s opinion of the idea of green curriculum and how to overcome any obstacles that they have experienced.

Where Intuition and Science Connect to Health and Wellness (Pillars II and III) We know intuitively that people like daylight. We know intuitively that working outside makes students happy. But recent advancements and research has provided deeper insight into why this is true. More and more we are learning that these seemingly intuitive approaches are data sound and critical to making a big difference in the health of our students and faculty. Learn how a greater understanding of circadian rhythms and lighting helps us design our indoor environments. Under- stand how biophilia – the “love of life” influences how people react to their interior and exterior environments. In our pursuit of supporting the Pillars of the Green Ribbon Program, a few case studies and tools will be shared that have been used to engage students and educators in creating long lasting opportunities for environmental and sustainable literacy and have improved the health and wellness of schools.
