Utility Programs and Prop 39: Recent Changes and Case Studies


This session will review utility offerings for Proposition 39 planning and implementation including energy efficiency incentives/rebates, demand response offerings, and curriculum and training with an emphasis on recent or upcoming changes to these offerings. These topics will be pre- sented through a series of real-life case studies of K-12 school districts that have leveraged Prop 39 funds and utility resources to stretch their grant funds further and obtain greater energy and cost savings.

Learning Labs Hidden in Prop. 39 Prop. 39 projects are transforming CA schools and campuses into energy-efficient sites that achieve significant financial savings. These projects also provide opportunities to include students in planning and implementation stages, offering valuable insight into the real-world application of STEAM topics. By offering pathways toward student participation in sustainability projects, schools become learning laboratories where students gain valuable vocational experience and inspire the school community to maximize the benefits new, efficient technology. This session will explore how student-led behavior change programs complement Prop. 39 projects by mobilizing building occupants to integrate efficiency and sustainability into the everyday culture of the educational community. Alliance to Save Energy’s PowerSave Schools Program staff will provide insight into behavior change programs, and Tammy Bird, a Carson High School science teacher, will share her experiences about the educational benefits of engaging students in on-campus sustainability projects.

Grades of Green: How to Green Your School Award winning environmental education nonprofit, Grades of Green, will teach attendees how they can utilize the Grades of Green program free of cost to inspire and empower students and the broader school community to care for the environment. Through implement- ing our fun, hands on activities, any school can go green! Creating environmentally friendly schools is important to the health of students and the environment, but often educators don’t know where to start. Grades of Green has created easy to read, step by step instructions that any educator, parent or student can follow to green their school. Grades of Green offers over 40 green activities that focus on energy, water, emissions, chemical and waste reduction. The session will provide an overview on some of the more popular green activities under each category.

10:15 am-12:15 pm California’s New Vision for Weaving the Environment into NGSS California’s new vision for science education fully integrates environ- mental content into the classroom. Presenters will provide a variety of examples of how environmental connections, such as the Environmen- tal Principles and Concepts (EP&Cs), and environment-based instruc- tion like the Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) curriculum, can be used to help teachers implement the three dimensional instruc- tional strategies embodied in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Participants in this workshop will begin to explore how they can effectively implement California’s new science standards in the context of their green schools and classrooms.
