Landscape Alternatives: Drought with the Possibility of Rain


California, as well as other states, has been in a serious drought for the past few years. Recent months have brought predictions of an El Nino for the winter of 2015. Do we go back to ornamental lawns as a landscape feature or do we learn and address the real issue?


Southern California has limited access to a precious natural resource, water. School site landscapes should be designed with water, a limited resource, as a guiding factor in determining the use of the space and plant selection. This session will propose low water use landscape solutions, beyond gravel and cactus. Facilities and maintenance staff and teachers should plan on attending to learn innovative ways to ‘green’ up your school campus landscape and reduce water use by up to 90% and maintenance costs by 50%, an added benefit to challenged school budget finances.


All attendees will receive a copy of the book Asphalt to Ecosystems: Design Ideas for Schoolyard Transformation, which documents inspiring green schoolyard examples from almost 150 schools in 11 countries. (The author, Sharon Danks, will be among the presenters.)
