11:15 am-12:15 pm US EPA’s Resources for Clean, Green and Healthy Schools The US EPA’s Children’s Health Program has an array of resources that provide schools with simple sensible steps to reduce exposure to harmful pollutants including lead, Mercury, Radon, PCB’s, Asbestos, asthmagens, and air pollutants and build a healthy schools environment.

Several studies have demonstrated the robust relationship between healthy school buildings/facilities and improved health outcomes, increased ADA, and superior academic achievement. EPA’s programs help schools leverage existing resources and partner with EPA and local health agencies to tackle environmental health issues in schools such as indoor air quality, pesticide use, contaminated drinking water, cleaning chemical use, and Asthma. Several opportunities exist for grants, technical assistance, classroom presentations, and staff training for implementing green cleaning, asthma, indoor air quality, integrated pest management, energy efficiency, and environmental education programs.

Deborah Moore of Green Schools Initiative will share the results of a national survey of Green Ribbon School winners about their leadership insights and the benefits of Green Ribbon recognition. Lesley Taylor, Consultant for the California Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools award program will explain the California Green Ribbon Schools award and how to use the application as an assessment tool to strengthen your team’s efforts. 2015 Green Ribbon winner Dorsey High School in South LA will show- case how hands-on sustainability initiatives foster excellent learning for a high school with 60% low-income students.

Strategies for the Successful Prop 39 (“CA Clean Energy Jobs Act”) Program, Funding Approval Strategies, Project Execution and Job Creation Christine Marez, Cumming Director of Energy and a panel of School District Owners from Santa Ana USD, Dale McCurry, Tustin USD, David Miranda, and Irvine USD, Joe Hoffman, to discuss their strategies and experience with Prop 39 and their successful submissions of Energy Expenditure Plans. District Owners will share valuable information learned while navigating the Prop 39 “8-Step process”, achievements and challenges preparing their Annual and Multi-Year Energy Expendi- ture Plans submissions to obtain CEC approvals of energy funding and execute Projects.
