Bioluminescence spans the globe, from sea fireflies in the Sea of Japan to fireflies in your own backyard. We bring these fascinating creatures to your classroom so students can study how living organisms use chemis- try to produce light. Sea Firefly Cypridina hilgendorfii. Collected from the Sea of Japan, these desic- cated organisms provide an example of a luciferin-luciferase system not requiring ATP for bioluminescence. Used by soldiers in World War II to provide a dim night-light; you simply crush the animals in sand and water to get a blue luminescence. Make separate lucif- erin and luciferase preparations which, when mixed, will luminesce. Instructions included.
