Ultrasonic tool predicts paper and board performance
A
tool that uses ultrasonic technology to enable early prediction of paper and board
material performance, while facilitating the optimisation of key production processes, has been launched by ABB. The L&W TSO Tester measures
Tensile Stiffness Index (TSI) and Tensile Stiffness Orientation (TSO) properties on machine- or cross- machine profile paper samples cut out from the jumbo reel. The device works by sending an
ultrasonic pulse across the paper and measuring its velocity in eight directions. The results predict the performance of paper used in a sheeting process, in a multi-colour printing process, in laser copying machines and when manufacturing corrugated board. Typical trouble-shooting and prevention facilitated by the

tool relate to the headbox, press and drying sections of the manufacturing process. In the headbox, for example, the device can help paper makers to identify
quickly whether action is required to manage pressure pulsations or deviating pressure profiles. The device can also be used to predict runnability in a range
of applications. When making corrugated board, for example, the device enables manufacturers to avoid warping by ensuring the TSI/ TSO measurement of the single face liner matches that of the double backer. “By providing manufacturers with timely access to key measurements,” says Thomas Fürst, Product Manager at ABB/ Lorentzen & Wettre, “papermakers can save on time and raw materials by catching potential issues early in the production cycle.” A typical cross-directional measurement is performed within five minutes, and provides complete information on the full web width, including edges. Italian rewinding machinery business bought by Valmet
The MC Paper Machinery and Focus Rewinding business has been bought by Valmet from Massimiliano Corsini srl. The acquired business at
Pescia near Lucca in Italy mainly supplies rewinders for tissue and non-woven machines. In recent years its sales have been about €10 million. The acquisition means that
Valmet will be able to offer a more extensive product portfolio and becomes a
stronger technology and services company in its field. Valmet says the deal also strengthens its competitiveness by combining tissue making equipment from stock preparation to rewinding, process know-how, automation and services into one customer value-adding entity. The two companies have been partners for many years and a large numbers of MC Paper rewinders have been installed
with Valmet tissue machines. Said Anders Björn, Vice
President of Valmet’s Tissue Mills Business Unit: “Valmet and MC Paper Machinery share the same determination to offer leading technologies, with highest customer satisfaction. Through the acquisition, Valmet will become a technology and service company with a wider offering of high technology equipment for tissue production.
“By combining tissue paper and re-winding machinery with process know-how, automation and services and global presence from both companies, we can serve the tissue producers even better than before and move our customers’ performance forward.” More information from Anders Björn, tel: 46 54 17 13 38 or Massimiliano Corsini, president, MC Paper Machinery and Focus, tel: 39 349 75 71 752.
