Smurfit Kappa mill awarded for its sustainability
S
murfit Kappa’s Zülpich paper mill in Germany has been awarded an innovation prize in
recognition of its sustainability performance. The AC² Innovation Award
from the District of Aachen recognises businesses that have made an exceptional contribution to innovation. Winners are traditionally drawn from the automotive or medical sectors, but the judging panel – which consisted of eminent university professors including the Chancellor of the RWTH University of Aachen and senior business leaders – created a special Jury Prize for the recycled paper facility. It also captures the biogas produced from the water cycle as a by-product, and burns this for power production. Finally, a multi- fuelled boiler uses unrecoverable waste to burn as fuel. Managing director of the Zülpich mill Christian Ludwig, said: “Smurfit Kappa Zülpich has long operated circular systems that deliberately reduce waste through innovative design, and maximise resource efficiency to offer our customers an environmentally friendly product. Scientex buys Mondi plants in Malaysia
A subsidiary of Malaysian packaging manufacturer and property developer Scientex Berhad has agreed to acquire two plants from Mondi Ipoh Sdn Bhd (MISB) for RM58.0 million to expand its consumer packaging division.
The acquisition of the two
plants at Ipoh in Perak, will expand Scientex’s packaging manufacturing capacity by 30 per cent. MISB is part of Mondi Consumer Packaging International GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of international packaging and paper group Mondi. “The successful acquisition of MISB would immediately allow the enlarged Scientex Group to expand our clientele to include
leading international brands in the food and beverage and fast moving consumer goods sectors,” said Lim Peng Jin, managing director of Scientex. “Additionally, approximately 70 per cent of MISB’s revenue comprises exports to Asia Pacific, thus giving us a larger market share in the regional packaging industry.
“Furthermore, we stand to
benefit from the increased production capacity of the Group’s downstream consumer packaging products, particularly functional films. This allows us to serve a broader set of requirements from new and existing clientele, especially large multinationals with diverse packaging needs.”
