LOGISTICS 9 Intermodal networks are the key


Peter Kleberg, Head of Shipping Logistics at Stena Line Group Freight, talks to PPL’s Consultant Editor David Young about shipping paper and pulp


magazine interviewed him was seven years ago when he was marketing director at DFDS Tor Line. Two years ago he joined Stena Line Group Freight as Head of Shipping Logistics, still based at Gothenburg in Sweden. We wanted to find out what insights had he gained about the shipping of pulp and paper, based on his wide experience in the field. Q: On joining Stena Line from North Sea RoRo AB more than two years ago, you said, “It will be very exciting to take on new challenges”. What challenges did you face and how have these been overcome? A: To learn about a new company and its decision-making processes is always exciting. I have the deepest respect for the knowledge that a company of this size has and the enormous experience that has been built up in all the years on the market. It takes more or less one year to learn all processes and where all the ‘bottoms’ are to get things going.

maximum possible access to their markets across four highly- focussed business regions: Baltic States, Russia and CIS; Irish Sea; North Sea; and Scandinavia. How does this benefit the paper industry? A: Stena Line has proven that with high frequency and high reliability its service to the paper industry has been growing over recent years. We have both, of course, via our customer segment of trailer operators, but also in indirect agreement with industry which is now provided with various types of cargo carrying equipment such as mafis and containers. Q: How important are intermodal terminals for transporting paper and pulp? A: Can’t live without them! The intermodal solutions are essential for Stena Line’s growth and also for the environment. We can take distant deliveries to our ports with


a suitable sea freight solution. We seek more possibilities for intermodal solutions all over Europe. Q: What would you say are Stena Line’s most useful Customer Support System (CSS) solutions for the paper industry? A: I would say it is our network system. We can offer reliable and cost-efficient paper solutions during periods when our normal traffic is sleeping. The rates we can offer today on certain unused sailings are unique and this together with intermodal solutions will make the Swedish and even some Finnish paper industries more competitive. Q: Will the company be introducing any new routes in addition to the 23 it operates today? A: No. We want to get our house in order and make most of what we have.


Specialised applications make a positive contribution


Stena Line Freight’s Shipping Logistics service offers specialised shipping applications to a number of industry sectors, including automotive, fresh foods, steel, retails, project cargo, chemicals, as well as pulp and paper. “The Paper Industry has many challenges,” says the company on


its web site. “Costs always on the rise have a negative impact on the productivity. Increasing energy costs and higher prices for fresh water are problem factors. “We are continuously developing new products and services to support our customers in managing these challenges. Q: On the environmental front, how are you meeting the challenges of the Sulphur Directive? A: In many different ways – low sulphur fuel and methanol tests on one ship and scrubbers, for example. Q: Given your marketing background, how do you assess results from taking part in trade fairs? A: It’s always hard to measure when you are taking part in a fair. However, as always, a flying bird gets something, but a sitting bird gets nothing! You must be seen: if not, you are dead! Q: What changes do you think will take place in the supply chain in the next five years? A: You will see more standard solutions and less capital-cost- based ‘own solutions’. If you want to be flexible then you need to be a non-asset owner and use the capacity on market.
